Puppy Issues

Got a couple of issues with the puppy. First off we are keeping him in the loungeroom to keep an eye on him but the problem is as soon as anyone leaves the room he sooks big time, it doenst matter that there's still people in the room and it doesnt matter who it is leaveing the room.

Second issue is the toilet training. We take him out every hour to a couple of hours but he still goes inside and he just doesnt give any warning!

What should we be doing with him? All of our other puppies have been so easy compared to this one :)

Crate training perhaps? Dr Dunbar recommends crating your pup and then hourly releasing to go eliminate.

Ziva sooked and barked at first when we left the room - we just ignored her and only went back into her eye sight when she had been quiet for a little while. Doesn't do it anymore :)

How old is your puppy?

I would ignore the sooking, especially if there are other people in the room!

With the toilet training- what reward are you using for going in the right spot? I used food with my lab and found it wokred pretty quickly.

Also if your puppy is under 10-12 weeks, he will probably need to go out at least every hour, possibly every half hour.

I took my puppy out every 30 mins for the first two weeks and then every hour until she was about 4 months

My guess is that he was originally a petshop puppy? they are typically hard to toilet train because they spend all day on shredded paper

My approach would be to crate, toilet every half hour - 1hr, and clicker train him, treat him like crazy when he gets it right and ignore when he doesnt

Ignore the crying, and praise when he is quiet. If you have him in his pen in the lounge room and you are watching tv or something and he starts crying, ignore it and when he stops, tell him how good he is and give him a treat. Never let him out of the pen while he is crying either.

As for toilet training, even when we took Jager out and he went, there were still times when we messed up and he went inside. Like your guy, he gave no warning when he was going to pee. One second he was trotting behind you down the hall, the next he was squatting. No whimpering, no sniffing, no circling. Just BAM going to the toilet now. When we saw him doing it, we gave a hard, firm 'No' or a growl. Picked him up and took him outside. Put him where he should go and then praised him. He never continued to pee after we picked him up but still praised him as soon as we put him in the right spot.

Take him out every 30-60 minutes, praise and treat when he goes. If you take him out and he doesnt go, watch him extremely closely when you take him inside again and take him out again in 5-10minutes.
