Heated Dog Beds

Because I've just finished paying off D's very expensive medical condition, I might actually have some money in the next few months and would like to buy the old fella a heated dog bed.

Should I get a bed or just a heated mat?

Can anyone recommend a size/style that would suit a GSD sized (well, an actual GSD) dog?

How do others use their heated dog beds? I was thinking I'd just turn it on an hour or so before bed, like I do with my electric blanket and then turn it on again at 4am?

Here is a photo of him taking advantage of my electric blanket last night, and a photo of his usual bed

I did see that K9Pro have them on special at the moment http://www.k9pro.com.au/products/Heating-P...Warm-a-Pet.html

Can't give a recommendation on this product - or any heat pad really - I've not used one... I doubt that Kuma will ever need one, he lies on the freezing concrete in the middle of winter (damn him and his spitz coat!). But I think that using it like you said - like you'd use your electric blanket - sounds sensible.

how do you use yours Rebanne?

hrm, if Aldi have had this year they have probably been too small for the D, but I will keep an eye out

They fit a greyhound on them, if they can get the cats off :( I have one in the loungeroom with a couple of polar fleece blankets on top and one in the laundry with a couple of ordinary blankets on it. Now it's turned cool they are on 24 hrs a day.

great - so on all day, any risk they will burn themselves sitting on it too long?

my siamese used to sit near the bar heater and damn near dehydrate if we didn't move him away from it

There is a padded one you can get from Harris Scarfe - Tail Waggers brand - it has the heat pad inside a foam mat with wooly top and they come in several sizes. We have two and use them for our old old dogs or a dog recovering from surgery / illness and sometimes even for puppies when they are out of the whelp box. Cannot remember the price we have had them for quite a while. I have a vet heat pad which I use in my heat box for newborns & wouldn't use that for an older dog don't think. With the Tail Waggers we usually cover it with dry bed which insulates well too - this gives the dog the option to move off the heat source and still be comfortable.

 One of my cats years ago used to sit on the bar heater and end up with burn stripes he sat so close !!! Dogs not so silly ;) and they cannot get burnt like that off a heatpad.

no risk of burning themselves. Yep had to move plenty of cats over the years from in front of the fire  I did buy another couple for the kitties ;)
