MalteseLuna
If you don't want a dog that sheds MASSIVELY don't pick a CKCS or a Pug. Tumbleweeds of hair come out of these breeds :D Instead pick a breed that has "hair" like a Maltese, Poodle, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Bichon Frise etc. There are plenty to choose from. Just be sure you are willing to deal with the grooming requirements.
Lady Flying Furball
How small do you call small? My brother's got a Cav, he's just over a year old and imo quite chunky - I think he weighs 8kgs, and the family try to be strict with his diet as it's supposed to be easy for Cavs to put on weight. I've found an 8kg dog is heavy on my lap (I'm small and no spring chicken ). Some little dogs are a bit chunky like that.A while back I saw a lovely little dog being walked, it was a Papillon. Smaller than the Cav and gorgeous. Don't know about the shedding though. They're supposed to be nice natured - and so are Cavs. I've found Maltese to be very cuddly, really people focussed. So are Cavs. I've seen some really tiny Maltese around, too. The one I know best is clipped every 3 months or so, otherwise her coat requires a lot more attention. Paps do shed and they certainly tend to be very active and animated dogs. Paps are quite animated which took me by surprise but at the same time they will settle and sleep at your feet or on your lap... With mine, he often suffices with one walk around the block each day and lives in an apartment! So I don't think that that is extreme by any measure and they are a breed recommended for elderly people. They love a cuddle and mine curls up on my bed to sleep at night (especially in winter!) Here is my cutie (they are a very unique gorgeous little breed) ETA regarding shedding, they lose some hair but quite minimal I find and tends to be seasonal. I do not have issues with dog hair on my clothes or up my nose, so they are easy in comparison to many smooth haired coats. Also they don't take much grooming and do not require any clipping of coat at all. Edited April 12, 2011 by FlyingFurball
Akay
A lot of people would disagree about Cavaliers not moulting much. I love them but I do end up with hair through the house. same here !! *nods in agreement* Cavs are sweet, gentle, lovely little dogs BUT in my experience they do shed a fair bit. Of course brushing will reduce what ends up floating around your house but you will always still end up with hair on your clothes, it's a fact of life when you live with cavaliers eta I obviously don't brush mine enough because I am always vacuuming up cavalier tumbleweeds :D The good thing about the tumbleweeds is that the hair congregates in the one ball and then you can just pick up the balls of hair on the floor! I actually find it pretty cool. The other thing about cav hair is that because it's quite fine it can be quite easily swept off couches with your hand or damp cloth. I once looked after a pug that shed everywhere and her hair was all over the microfibre couch and it was so hard to get it off, whereas the cavs came off quite easily. I also get cav hair all over my clothes. I went to the shop the other day and the counter operator asked if I have dogs (while looking at my black shirt with white hair all over it!). If you wear mostly dark clothes and settle on a cav you can always get a black and tan! Even though they shed a lot, they're my choice of dog, I just love them to bits, I love their natures and the way they interact with humans and other dogs. zoozoo
Shih Tzu!! They are so sweet, love a walk but wont complain if they dont get one for a few days. Mine doesnt moult at all - he's brushed once a week (really quickly) and clipped every couple of months. As a few other people mentioned - the yappy aggressive small dog is almost always the owner's fault. If they're socialised well and given clear boundaries you shouldn't have a problem. aussielover
Small dog attitude is all in the training. Socialise thoroughly from day one and do basic obedience training, and you should be fine. I basically agree, but I think terriers have a pretty spunky attitude that may take a bit more work to ensure they don't become nippy/aggressive with other dogs. They're generally pretty brave and don't mind telling off another dog if they don't like what it is doing. Not to say they are all DA; my lab is great mates with a JRT 1/3 her size who always gets the better of her lol
GraceMcC
Thanks everyone for your suggestions!...... We used to have bichon x maltese, however she was a little terror!, we took her to puppy classes and the like but she simply never listened.. Couldn't let her of the lead, when she did she would run off in the other direction, once diving into someones fish and chips they were having on the beach, and again jumping into a complete strangers car! She was very agressive as well, god forbid you went near her when she had food... She would take of climing through the fence, something she did often once she figured out how. In the end we rehomed as she was such trouble! Believe me when I say we did every thing we could! We thought after such a bad experiance we should do some more research into breeding and dogs behaviour before getting a new pup..
Lindainfa
Sorry guys, everyone disagrees with me about the CKCS and shedding! LOL. I honestly don't think my boy sheds that much, but it could be because I compare it to my ragdoll cat which is basically a fur making machine.
