Posted April 10, 2011 Share Posted April 10, 2011 I have had my last puppy advertised here on the DOL pages, on Petlink and in the newspaper for the past two weeks, but unfortunately no serious, committed enquiries. In last week's newspaper ad I put $POA, got one call from a lady who seemed quite nice, I told her the price and emailed some photos and never heard back. I'm honestly thinking the price is putting people off. Now to me, I don't believe it to be excessive for a puppy of my breed (I paid the same for my girl nearly 3 years ago) but considering the newspaper here is full of pig cross specials and maltshits for anywhere between $100-$400, mine is probably the most expensive in the paper. He's only 10 weeks old, so still in the cute puppy stage. At what point would most breeders consider dropping the price so that the puppy still goes to a nice home before they reach an age where adjusting to a new home may be difficult? WreckitWhippet Posted April 10, 2011 Share Posted April 10, 2011 I wouldn't reduce him and I've never reduced any of the pups I've had for sale. Start to teach him some basic commands like sit, drop and how to walk on a leash. House train him if you haven't already. I would just incorporate him in to the family as if he was staying and the right home will come along. I have had to reduce the price of some of my puppies for my last litters (bullmastiffs). I had two litters together with 20 pups in total and every tom dick and harry had litters at the same time,lol. Its not good (or easy) to still have numerous large breed puppies left at 12-15 weeks of age (3 of which I was runnning on and needed to start working with). Its a hell of a lot of work and almost impossible to give them the individual time,attention, training and socialisation that they desperately need at that age and that was my main worry. Despite being desperate to get them into new homes, I did not relax my conditions and still refused people a puppy that I didnt think were suitable. I will not be having two large breed litters together again, depite it nearly killing me,lol, it was two hard to find them all homes by 8 weeks. I sterilise all my pet puppies and I think that put alot of people off too, wont change my decision to still do it though. becks Posted April 10, 2011 Share Posted April 10, 2011 I wouldn't drop the price, just start the basic training and socialising - there are plenty of people out there looking for older pups as they don't want to do the house training phase. wayrod Posted April 10, 2011 Share Posted April 10, 2011 The remaining enquiries are they coming for your area or they from interstate, sometimes it may not be your price but it may your price plus the cost of freight. Also remember that the older your pup is the more vaccinations that have been undertaken, all at a cost. I agree house training, possibly even show training may be incentives. Also get some qoutes for freight and crate hire, one to Melbourne and one to Sydney and put that in your add, if people have an idea about what it may cost they could be more interested. I wouldn't drop your price, but as suggested start training and mention that in your add and also mention if and when the 2nd vaccination is done should you still have him. Good luck! Subsidised transport costs, or pet insurance for 6 months, worming products, the list could be endless or even payment of transfer fee for registration papers into new owners name. Like most breeders here, I did breed the litter first and foremost for myself. I ended up deciding to keep 2, was originally going to keep just the one, and thought I had two certain homes before the pups were born. One stayed on, unfortunately the other pulled out at 4 weeks old. I do though consider myself lucky that there is only the one remaining to buy a home for... couldn't imagine an extra 10 large breed pups running around!!! Breeding is not something I will be doing whenever I feel like it, due to space restrictions, particularly over the next 2-3 years. And if I'd waited for a huge list of people for another litter, it might take me years to actually put a bitch in whelp! Not to mention that as previously mentioned, people with the best intentions on waiting lists can and do change their mind. SwaY Posted April 13, 2011 Share Posted April 13, 2011 I had a puppy leave at 4 months with this last litter. She was a feral little thing. She needed the perfect home or she would have been back within months! By the time she left she was fully vaccinated, crate/toilet/lead trained and very well socialised. She could sit/drop/stay/shake hands and heel like a dream. I didn't drop the price I just raised her like I would have one of my own. They called her Lucy, short for Lucifer! ozjen Posted April 22, 2011 Share Posted April 22, 2011 The last puppy often seems to take abit longer to sell, usually because people have this crazy logic that as it is the last pup there must be something wrong with it, forgetting that there will always be a last one. In my case the last is often the best one that I have held back to see how it develops. I have seen a pup that had its price reduced considerably, not sell and then when I encouraged the person to sell it at normal price it sold to a wonderful home. Sometimes it just takes abit longer so in the mean time the pup can get the advantage of some training and the new owners when they come along get a bonus of having the training already started. Yes, we had a happy ending yesterday, a lucky young girl is getting Mikey as her 12th birthday present (with lots of help and support from Mum and Dad of course). And at his 'original' price too.
