GoldenGirl85
My mums CKCS has an itchy ear (not the inner ear, the ear flap) it doesnt look red or irritated at all, but he has large flakes of skin peeling off and its very itchy...Ive asked her for a photo but she said she scratched all the flakey skin off today so there isnt much to photograph Does anyone know what it might be? I know its hard to tell without a photo, she has taken him to the vet who just gave him ear drops, but the problem isnt actually his inner ear so drops wouldnt do anything
BigDaz
I am no expert, just the owner of a Staffy who has ear problems often. I find she may scratch the outer of her ear simply because thats in the general area, same as scratching under the ear, she is just trying to get to the irritation the best she knows how. The last time she scratched the flap (or whatever its called) so much it was red, but the infection was deep in her ear. Did the Vet say if it was a yeast infection, did they give a dermotic? I usally get a little white bottle with a green label.
GoldenGirl85
Im not sure what drops were prescribed, it could even have been something as simple as a saline wash you know...its a country vet I saw the dog a couple of weeks ago, he is very irritated by the itching of the ear, he can get reluctant to let you look at it, however there is no smell, nor redness to indicate an infection, the skin around the flaking doesnt look irritated despite the scratching yet there is all this peeling of the skin, its not like little dandruff flakes

W Sibs
- Trim the hair inside the ear... the little hair is probably annoying them and making it worst. - Brush the ear with a comb everyday for 15 minutes (each ear).. just around the ear area. - I clean the area with the ear solution that the vet gave me. The flake this is probably ear wax?
Sandra777
Has she recently bathed the dog - shampoo residue can cause that sort of flakiness. Anything the dog could be getting actually on it's ear to have the same affect.
GoldenGirl85
Sorry I should have been more specific, its on the outside of his ear not the inside They do get bathed every fortnight, yet to convince my mum that a good diet can get rid of that icky feeling the dogs get when they arent bathed frequently...these guys live on Pal, so I guess it could be that, its funny that its only the one ear though, it has been itchy for some time now it does actually look like its skin peeling...sort of the way your skin peels when you have a sunburn
