For Those That Feed Raw

As the title suggests - if you feed raw to your adults and also the puppies, how do you suggest to your puppy owners to give it a try? I know that for a large number of puppy buyers, they might try it for a while but change over to what they think (or their vet thinks) in time. We all know feeding raw can be seen as more expensive, less convenient, more time consuming etc...

Do you, or would you consider, reverting to a good quality kibble for your litter as well as feeding some raw, so that the transition onto kibble the new owners feed will be an easier one, but that those being fed raw can also continue on this?

First question in bold - I provide a detailed diet sheet outlining everything they need to know about: what and how much.

Second question in bold - No, I raise on majority of raw, last litter was raised completely on raw.

Thanks Aziah

Do you know if any/most of your puppy buyers have continued to feed raw or if they have changed over to something else?

Over time I've had several add in some dry (and I'm ok with that, I always recommend a dry on my diet sheet should they not feel comfortable after some weeks of complete raw feeding).

I've had puppy buyers coming back to me several years later saying they wished to go back to raw only and want advice on what etc.

It cuts both ways, I am totally aware that not everyone is completely comfortable or in the situation to feed a complete raw diet, it's important to me that my puppy owners are aware that diets are flexible and that as a breeder I am too...I want them to be able to feel that they can pick up the phone and discuss all aspects of their puppy/adult with me (including diet) and not be shut down and told 'no' at every turn.

I will however continue to raise my babies on a majority of raw food :)

With my last litters (2 at the same time) I incorporated some premium quality kibble in to the puppies diet becasue I knew most would not stick with a completely raw diet and I would rather have some input into what sort of kibble they use, than have them rush out to the supermarket when it got too hard to feed raw and by Goodos or something equally crap. Having said that I did talk to them about the benefits of complete raw and provide all my puppy buyers with Dr Billinghursts book " The BARF Diet".

I do know some of my puppy buyers have reverted to just dry food at the recommendation of their vet :) :)

I believe in RAW feeding and have done do for over 16 years now. All of my pups are raised on RAW with a small amount of quality kibble given as well. Reason being I know most puppy buyers will not carry on a total raw diet but most will use a quality kibble with fresh meat, raw meaty bones with some other extras like yoghurt etc. I supply two diets for the puppy people, one that is totally raw and the other is 80% raw with some kibble. I also suggest the BARF type patties that you can now purchase (wasn't around many years ago) and explain the health benefits of feeding a RAW diet over a totally commercial one based on my experiences.

Most puppy buyers stick with the 80% raw type diet supplemented with quality kibble.

However recently a lot are now buying the BARF type patties and going down the RAW diet because of the convenience of purchasing the ready made patties with all the extras in it. They just add raw meaty bones. Life is a little easier to do RAW now for the newbies because of the commercial BARF patties that are available, with having one or two dogs only it isn't that expensive cost wise for them (a number of my recent puppy buyers have gone down that track).

I still make all my own up because it is second nature now because I have been doing it for so long and also the bulk purchases keep the cost down.

I also tell them that most Vets are not specialists when it comes to canine nutrition and most of them will try and push the products that they sell and to be aware of this.

It is now easier to keep them feeding RAW because of the commercial range of RAW foods available.

Good Luck!!!!
