Lollipup
I seem to have to listen to a lot of misconceptions on dog talk lately. but none more frustrating than my dad. i could fill the thread with things he says that make me so irritated. because he is always right above anyone else. because i am studying dogs, he always brings it up. he thinks i am wasting my time and money on my course because he already knows it all. here are some of the more recent things he truly believes and gets angry if i try to say otherwise. 1. Black and tan kelpies and red kelpies are two different breeds. Australian cattle dogs, blue heelers, red cattle dogs and red heelers are 4 different breeds. 2. He hates GSD based on his extensive knowledge of them (yet he didnt know what GSD stands for). Part of his reason is bad experiences he has seen/heard of. But the other part is because he believes they are not a breed - they are too closely related to the wolf and if you dont keep breeding back to the long haired ones, they start to revert back to the wolf genes and turn on you. none can be trusted, they will always turn on you and attack you. I know, ridiculous. I try to take the calm approach and simply ask him where he got his information. he said his experience and he knows a lot. and to google such and such and i will see all the evidence. Since I started learning dog training, everytime i go over there he demonstrates something with his dogs to show what a great trainer he is. usually its using intimidation on the dogs. he tries to "train" my dogs even though i specifically ask him not to. He is always saying "leave them with me and i'll have them trained in a week for you" like he thinks i am incompetent. He has done things with my dogs against my will which has set them back in their training and inflamed existing issues - such as making Lola chase a laser light when she already has issues chasing shadows and such. And on the weekend he had her on his lap and was roughing her up making her growl and encouraging her growl at the other dog approaching. I was repeating over and over to stop it and said you are encouraging her to be aggressive. He just said I am not, I am just playing. I could go on but I think I better stop for now. Lets just say its stuff like this all the time. The worst part is that he passes on all his "knowledge" to others and some listen. Sorry its long. Please tell me I'm not the only one with an impossible relative!
poodlefan
1. Don't take your dogs to your parents place. Put them away when your Dad visits. 2. Just politely say " I don't want to talk about dogs with you Dad" when the subject comes up. Or agree with everything he says. Trust me, this will drive him nuts. :p Sounds like a man looking for an argument to me. And yes, my Dad does it too. Fortunately for me, dogs ain't the topic my Dad chooses to argue about. Most of my dog owning relatives are "outside only" "inside spoils dogs" kinds of folk. I just dont raise the subject with them. I would seriously pay to see it! Of course I would be backing poodlefan! LOL - the reason being because I have two GSD and they are the most beautiful dogs... I do find, however, that you either love GSD or you hate them... there never seems to be any in-between with people. Edit: The people I have MET I should say. I stand corrected if I am completely wrong! Edited April 5, 2011 by Leelaa17
spitzbaby
Completely with you... I had to rant about desexing to friends to get it out of my system. As soon as I mention I'm going to desex... you won't believe how many people come to me to talk me out of it. Reasons go from pity to the more absurd one like money. Talking about the topic once and me explaining to them is one thing.. but when everyone keeps asking the same question over and over again within a 3 days period, I gave up and tell them I'm not talking about this to non-dog people. I once said, it may reduce the chance of them getting cancer (I'm not very educated in the health side of this) but they straight away assume that my dog DOES have cancer. ("OMG your dog has cancer!! omg I feel so sorry for your dog) "No, dog does not have cancer, I said it may reduce the chance of them getting it" ("OMG, how come they have cancer, why why why) Yeah.. just ignore what I said and keep at it... :p Sorry I started ranting again... poodlefan
Black and tan kelpies and red kelpies are two different breeds. So how does one dog produce two different breeds in the same litter? :p Anyone who says "but what about Chihuahuas, Collies or Chinese Crested Dogs. Belgian Shepherds etc " is going to get a visit from the Smack Fairy. Edited April 5, 2011 by poodlefan

Leelaa17
I should also say that I have someone in my familly like that as well... She has owned like 2 dogs in her entire life (and they werent very well behaved, social or even stable dogs... one of them wouldnt go near anyone.. and I mean anyone - she doesnt do that now but it took her about 5 years to get over her fear of people and other dogs)... She thinks she knows everything... not necessarily about dogs but ANYTHING and you cant get into a debate with her because you. will. lose. Thats a fact - even if you are right... she wont believe you. lol and she wont admit shes wrong. I just sit there and pretend to listen to the crap she has to say and then never talk about the subject around her. I know its not that easy for some people though! LOL Why am I suddenly hearing the theme from Rocky? :p Its because you always have a very informed side to these posts - people respect and more importantly LISTEN to you. You have a great insight that not a lot of others have, and you are always willing to be the dogs advocate no matter what. It is not a bad thing that we would want you in the same room as the dad... its a good thing because out of EVERYONE - YOU would probably be the only person that could ever get through to him! whiskedaway
I tend to be so bad about keeping quiet when someone sprouts rubbish - OH is always saying "IGNORE, IGNORE, IGNORE". :p
poodlefan
I tend to be so bad about keeping quiet when someone sprouts rubbish - OH is always saying "IGNORE, IGNORE, IGNORE". :p I bet my face was a study in contortion the day my mother attempted to link the quality of Adelaide's water to Australia's immigration policy. Parents - can't live with them, can't shoot them. Sometimes I'm convinced my parents stole me from a sensible dog loving family somewhere. They are cat people. ~Rumour~
My MIL is the worst at this. We stopped by her house and had Diesel with us he then tried to intiate play with her "backyard ornament" (a Kelpie) and then both Diesel, my OH and I got yelled at. Because dogs playing together encourages them to bite people especially children :p I don't mention dogs around her anymore its just easier

I mean its just luck if the police point the dogs in the right direction and get out of the way when they set them loose. :p
