My Dogs Are Going Away

My dogs have never been away from home. All our holidays have been with the dogs. However, we feel that we should get them used to staying in kennels since we would like to have overseas holidays. In that spirit we have booked them in at the Terrigal Pet Resort for two days since it's the only kennel around Sydney where my dogs can have their own room (with a proper bed) and private courtyard!!!

How does everyone else manage when you send your dogs to kennels? Do you let them put another dog with yours? Do you let them take your dog out for the group play times? I've opted for walks for my dogs since I find the idea of 20 odd dogs in an enclosed play area supervised by one person a potential disaster.

Has anyone else used the Pet Resort? Any feedback?

I have very rarely boarded my dogs but there is no way I would allow any of mine to play with unknown dogs with unknown people supervising. My dogs are boarded for safety not for socialisation and playtime.

Glad to hear that. I wondered if I was being paranoid since all others seem to happily let their dogs join the play groups. My two will be boarded together as well so they'll have each other for company. And I think a walk around the lagoon will be a much nicer exercise.

I have never boarded my dogs (my oldest is 5 next month) I hope I never ever have to but if I did, I would not like them to be socialized with other dogs, even though they are all well socialized I just wouldn't feel right with out my full supervision.

Proper bed and court yard sound great, and walks sound like great too. Hope your doggies have a ball.

Our dogs stay at Rover's Retreat which is fantastic. There they allow the dogs to run together and at first I was quite nervous about it, but because they are a small kennel and they know all of the dogs personally, they know which dogs to mix and which to not. Our dogs love it, they are such social butterflies.

Although I would be less willing to allow the dogs to play with other dogs at a different kennel, I would consider it, especially if the dogs are supervised and, if I think logically it is the reputation of the kennel on the line and the last thing they would want or need is an injured dog due to a fight. Not sure what the rules are, but it would be good to know your rights.

No to mixing with other dogs while I'm away. Mine share kennels with each other and so have company, but even if I was just boarding one dog, I wouldn't want it mixing with other dogs without my supervision.

We board ours. We make it clear they are only to be put out with each other. We use a place in Woodford, its over an hour to get there but they are good, they happily boarded the 4 we used to have and actually listened to us regarding which of our dogs could run together and which wern't to be run together, all to not meet strange dogs and Harry could be a bit HR but adored all the staff at the kennels. Only people apart from family he ever warmed up to actually.

Thanks for the replies. Makes me feel better about my choice. My OH and I are also staying over at Terrigal to have a short holiday of our own. We will drop the dogs at the resort and pick them up on our way back. Can't bear to be home without our dogs

We went to check out the place last week and it looks really nice. They also have a swimming pool for dogs. The staff seemed very friendly to both humans and dogs  They gave us and our dogs a tour of the place.

I think that you would find "IF" your dogs were playing with other dogs the Kennel staff would already know which dogs would be compatable.

I worked in a Boarding kennels and we only had the little ones running around together "NEVER" the bigger dogs (unless they were from the same home).

It was an absolute delight to see about 15-20 little dogs running around together.

My dogs go into boarding and because I know how they are at Kepala I tell the kennels that if they wish to have mine out with others no problem :)

None of the kennels in our area pen dogs together that arent from the same family. I would NEVER send my dogs to a kennel where it was done.

Only one of my dogs ever goes to the kennels (the other 2 stay home and have someone look after them), she is a fence jumper and I would never want a pet sitter to have to put up with the risk of her nicking off and if she were penned it would not be long enough out time if she were only out while the pet sitter were there.

The new kennel where she is - tonight is her first night there, as we are leaving for our honeymoon early tomorrow morning - has HUGE pens with amazing fences and a night pen, they are NEVER put in with other dogs, they aren't put into a specific exercise yard either due to the enormous size of their day pens.

I could never leave Froggy somewhere that put dogs together for penning or playtime, she plays with some dogs but others are just too in her face and she really doesnt like that and her way out of that situation is to snap it at them.
