Austerra
What would groomers out there charge for a Golden Retriever (big and old) to have a complete clip off? Just wondering as I had a customer complain about price we charged, which is the average price we usually charge for a full clip on a dog of this size, most think we are very reasonable and it isn't this dogs first visit! stormie
I think our groomer would be about $70 assuming it wasn't matted to the skin? This includes hydrobath, blow dry and nails.
Evolving
wow I think I used to pay about $60-$70 for Bob and that was with no nail clip or wash.

Austerra
She has been in many times before, as we keep computer records I was able to tell her that she had been charged the same amount of $75 for full clip inc bath, dry and nails previously, other times when only $60-65 was only bath and tidy, price depending on condition on day. She suddenly seems to think it should be cheaper to clip a dog all over rather than brush it out! In her words "You are just running the clippers over the whole dog, it's not like you are doing a lot of work on it!"
WreckitWhippet
I would have charged somewhere around $100, quite possibly $120 if the dog was heavy to handle, had to have frequent rests and didn't just stand there for me.

I think your costs are very reasonable for a dog that size

Then she'll find out how "little" work is involved. Add $10 to the price for the "challenging customer service fee". If they brushed the bloody dog regularly he wouldn't need to be clipped. I'd never make it as a dog groomer because I'd not be able to resist the urge to point that out. Why DO people buy long haired dogs if they're not prepared to groom them. Clyde
Most of mine were from people whose dog had a close brush with death from a tick. They get shaved at the vet and the owners love the hairless option due to finding ticks with more ease plus a lot less shedding. I think vets could do with a bit more education on grooming and coats. I know plenty of vets who will recommend clipping coats to' keep dogs cool in summer.'
WreckitWhippet
Ohhh don't you just love that. I've had countless people come in wanting to clip GSD's, ACD's, GR's etc, the vet having said clipping will make them cooler. They have all been obese and the loss of 20 odd kg's wouldn;t have gone astray in some cases.
Austerra
This dog isn't matted at all they just want it clipped off to keep it cool and easy to manage, it is old and fat, hence does suffer on even a mildly warm day.

Haha, when I worked in accounting we used to charge "P&S" to certain clients ie Pain & Suffering!

Why DO people buy long haired dogs if they're not prepared to groom them. lol - I could touch up on people skills at times. One client really pissed me off, I was clipping her little fluffy right off due to sever matting when her 8 yo daughter saw how short it was she screamed and carried on about cutting all the hair off. I explained to her about the condition of the coat and when the mother was starting to carry on too I showed her the matted clump of hair, explaining that hair is not supposed to look like that and correct brushes and combs needed so the dog will not need to be clipped off so short again. Then she had the nerve to tell me "I have all those and heaps more" - I snapped back at her "well use them - they are no bloody good in the cupboard they have to be used to work"...not sure if I ever did theirs again... Yep - got to "love" the ungrateful sods, makes you appreciate the good clients even more. ;)
Abby
I think it cost about $100 - we took a relative's old GR for a full clip and bath (he was very patchy due to shaved parts from operations so they wanted him to look a bit tidier).
Guest Panzer Attack!
We charge $88. Considering we charge about $66 for a small dog (like evolving's Bobby) I think the large dog owners get a really good deal!! Big dogs are so awkward to clip and take sooo much time. Generally you have to brush all the dead hair out before you clip them or it will look all clumpy and disgusting so it's double the work - and don't even get me started on the matting. I hate when people want their double coated breeds shaved and then don't brush them and THEN have the hide to complain about the price when they only get the poor hot-spot covered thing done once a year!!! Grrrr.
