1. Please stop shouting - all capital letters is hard on the reader.

2. What do you feed them?

3. Have you had them to the vet to check their ears, mouth, skin and anal glands?

4. What do you wash them in and how often to you groom and wash them?

Toy breeds as outside dogs

All the questions PF ask and What shampoo do you use?

If they are out door dogs, they probably would smell more with them playing in the dirt, roll in dead animals and doing what normal doggies do when they are outside. Especially with their long fur and everything sticking to it or hiding in the coat.

I have a Cavvie x and I haven't given him a bath in months and he rarely smells (in fact the only time he does get a bath is when he starts to smell) but he is mostly an indoor dog. He does get brushed everyday too.

How often do you change their bedding, and what do you wash it in?

Is their hair trimmed at all?

When were their anal glands checked last?

What is in the yard? lawn?dirt?paving?

Smelly dog can be all sorts of things..from the need for clean new beds, to a yeast infection, to seeping anal glands, to dirty feet ..to all sorts of other problems .A bit hard to diagnose on a forum

Not a cavvy person (will be if hubby gets his way!) but how often are their ears cleaned? Spaniel ears can get absolutely grotty, no offense. And that holds reek, especially if they get infected. It's quite humid there, isn't it?

Are their teeth good?

How is their coat is it like "ew you've been rolling" smell or "ew you have a skin infection" smell?

My Cav gets a weekly bath. The only reason he needs that is that he goes to daycare once a week. When I pick him up from that OMG does he stink, so much so that I need the windows down until we get home and he gets a bath. But otherwise he never smells.

Apart from each other, do your dogs spend much time with other dogs?

When you bath them do you wash/replace all their bedding etc?

p.s. I use Aloveen shampoo on my one and it is nice and gentle on him.

Of my three cavs one has a "stronger" odour than the other two. The mother and daughter don't seem to have as strong a doggy smell, fortunately the one who carries a stronger doggy odour is shown regularly so is bathed weekly or at a stretch fornightly if not going to a show. I do find when they are outside playing in fine weather they can get a bit smelly but compared to the German Shepherd they really don't carry a strong doggy smell. All my dogs get regular grooming between baths.

You can try regular brushing between baths with a powder/grooming spray or bi carb soda lightly spinkled in their coat to absorb the smell, then brushed out thoroughly.

That's provided the smell isn't coming from anal glands or bad teeth or ear infections which all need checking regularly.

My cav stinks after 3-4 days because of a yeast infection. I have started to bath her once a week in neem grooming shampoo then with neem conditioner. She stops smelling and doesnt scratch as much. Brushing her every day and changing her bedding every couple of days helps to. Someone at a dog show recommended yakult..a bottle a day to get rid of the yeast infection. I havent tried it yet tho.

Dogs don't usually smell (to the point of "stink") unless there is something wrong (refer Poodlefan's post questions), or unless they are rolling in putrid smelly substances (which they would only be able to do if they have access to them.

So I agree that you need to look first at why they might be carrying this objectionable odour and fix that, rather than leaving the cause in place and using chemicals (ie shampoos) to constantly wash away the smell. Washing too much can become a cause for the smell as well - the body is stripped of its natural oils, the skin pH balance is altered, and so the body goes into overdrive to correct the imbalance, sending the pendulum swing way too far in the other direction.

Hey Liath ..... have you tried bathing her with Calendula Tea? I'd give that a go - you should know fairly quickly if it is likely to assist. The Calendula Tea helps the skin pH balance. It also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities.

A DOLer here reported that it turned her dog's white hair yellow. I never experienced that and I know of no-one else who has either. I sent her some of my Calendula Tea and she reported that was much better (which made me think the Calendula she bought had been dyed to intesify its colour and make it more attractive - but that's sheer hypothesis on my part). The point of telling you this is so that you will purchase from a Health Food Store and ask them to give you organic/natural Calendula Tea.
