Sooky Posted March 31, 2011 Share Posted March 31, 2011 (edited) Hi, Now that a lot of us have just brought home our pups I thought we should have a thread where we can post our pics and let each other know how our pups are getting on as the 'Waiting for a Puppy' thread isn't really relevant anymore. I'll go first We brought Rebus home 20th March at 8 wks old he whinned A LOT the first couple of days but has settled in well now. He follows me everywhere if I move he moves and is always at my feet. He is very calm and placid unlike any dog I've had before I actually sometimes wondered if theres something wrong with him he's so laid back . Toilet training was sorted within 2 days!! He sleeps in his crate in my room at night at first we were up once or twice a night taking him out but he now sleeps through . I have taught him a few commands - sit, drop, paw and leave it he's picked them all up really quickly. We will hopefully be starting puppy classes next weekend and after that will be going to a training club mainly for fun and socialisation nothing too serious. So come on Naomi, Huga, Jakemon (cant' think of anyone else of the top of my head sorry!) and everyone else with new bubbas tell us all about them hear . Naomi Posted March 31, 2011 Share Posted March 31, 2011 Lovely pictures of Rebus and Halo. Rebus sounds adorable, and I'm already a huge Halo fan. I bought Archie home on the 11th of March. He is 10 and a half weeks old at the moment. He is seriously like velcro. Follows me everywhere, although he has become a bit more independent lately which means I need to get serious about a good recall. But he has a great 'sit' and 'drop'. Still working on 'stay', 'come' and some leash practice this week. I have puppy school on Sunday. I'm sooooo looking forward to it. I can't wait to have an obedient puppy. He is going through a bitey stage at the moment but I'm working through it and he is gradually improving. He is not laid back at all. Always on the go and always wanting to play. I love this! When he has a break I get to have a break too. LOL. Here is Archie at 8 weeks. Archie almost 9 weeks old. And Archie last weekend at 10 weeks old. (seriously.. once the penny drops that there is an AWESOME reward the rest is easy) Her drops are like that because the game was the quicker she touched the ground with her elbows the quicker the treat entered her mouth haha with my online name as Jakemon (my old dogs nickname) people must think Im a guy! My first husky was literally the whacko for schmackos dog Esky is crazy about toast, over every other treat i've tried. It's toast! I'm sure you'll find what makes Archie tick. Nadine83 Posted April 4, 2011 Share Posted April 4, 2011 (edited) Hi everyone, Congratulations to all on your new arrivals We picked Lily (9wks old) up on Saturday, so she has been with us for 2 nights. The first night we were up twice and last night she slept for 6.5hrs with no toilet break (we wait for her to whinge to go). I have a few questions How was your pup for the first few days/week? Lily whinges and barks when first put in her crate but she soon settles and goes to sleep. If you crate train does your pup whine as well? She also whines and barks when we leave her outisde alone (so we don't do this) and if she is blocked of to the kitchen area and we aren't in there. I am guessing this is normal and that it will pass? At the moment we just ignore her when she does that. What is your routine for your puppy? Play, sleep etc? Have you started basic obedience yet (sit, drop etc)? What games do you play with your puppy to tire them out and how often in the day do you play with them (and duration)? Inevitablue Posted April 4, 2011 Share Posted April 4, 2011 Congrats Nadine, she looks so pretty. 6.5hrs between wee breaks, I'm jealous! Tess was more like 6.5 minutes between wee's. Tess is now 15 weeks old, and most go through the whining stage, but be persistant. Make sure she is comfortable, with something to occupy her. Get her comfortable now with entertaining herself, and you have a better chance of a more laid back, easy going dog I believe. If the only reason for whining is because she wants to be inside/next to you/ out of her crate keep ignoring her. Aim to make her spend 30min outside by herself daily(if its all safe - I have a pool which made it challenging - first 2 weeks she was velcro'd to me) Definately start some obedience training, make it fun and it will help wear her out too. I just do random things here and there throughout the day, not a strict 10min session. Games retrieving her toys, looking for hidden food, calling her so she has to find you in the house are all fun and get the puppy to start thinking about things. Nadine83 Posted April 4, 2011 Share Posted April 4, 2011 Jakemon- Thanks for those tips and game ideas I am new to all of this so was just checking that it was all normal and I was doing the right thing Our backyard is safe but I was more worried about annoying the neighbours (although during the day most are at work I believe). Inevitablue Posted April 4, 2011 Share Posted April 4, 2011 I went and spoke to my neighbours, explained that if they can just put up with a little bit of whining for a few days, then long term they will most likely have a quieter dog living next to them. They were fine as long as the whining wasn't at night. I try to make most of my games training sessions. This last weekend gone, we spent the weekend with the MIL and Tess was in her backyard. Thankfully because she has learnt to settle where ever I put her she was no trouble whatsoever. MIL's cat was not impressed though also MIL doesnt let dogs in the house so Im lucky that she learnt early that whining doesnt get her what she wants. She happily slept on the back doorstep (on a bed, undercover) but very different to her usual sleeping arrangement - my room! lol Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
