Isabel964
I am considering pet insurance. I have two dogs and two cats. Anyone have any recommendations? Do you have to insure each animal or does any company do a group rate? I just want insurance for vet fees for illness and injury, I don't need travel, death coverage, boarding fees etc Looking at Petplan - i looks like its about $34 a month per dog. W Sibs
Nope, neither my dogs are insured but they do have bank account of their very own. We put aside money for them in case of emergencies. But there has been a lot of thread on pet insurance here though...
poochmad
I used to think it was a good idea until a lot of people on here advised against it, mainly due to the fine print and things you think would be covered aren't. You're better off finding out how much one would cost and then putting that money aside in case something happens. Somewhere hard to get, like on your mortgage or in an account that you can't touch for a period of time.
OSoSwift
Yes two of my dogs are. So far no hassles and I have got close to my premium back each year.
Life Of Riley
I have pet insurance for all 3 of my dogs and for me it has been very well worth it. In the last 6 months alone i have claimed over $6000 in vet bills and surgery. Since having insurance it has easily paid itself off and more. My 10 month old Newfie has racked up enough bills that the savings i have made would cover her policy for 10 years. You also have the peace of mind of being able to go to a specialist for complicated surgeries. I have never had any problems with my claims the money is in my account very quickly. I wouldn't reccomend any particular one, best to do your own research and work out what is best for you.
nightgrace6
I have pet insurance for my dobe, she is 14 weeks and she has broken a toe and had surgery already... I have medibank gold insurance and it has pretty much already paid for itself! Recommended.. although you do have to fork out to start with then you get the cash back so having a bank account sounds like a good idea!
Fatsofatsoman
I've got Pet Plan for my lab - we have the middle plan - around $45 a month. This provider was highly recommended to us. So far we haven't had to use it and long may that continue. It is good for peace of mind.
wagsalot
I don't have it, but we currently enough savings set aside that if something happened we could pay for it. If we didn't that as a back up plan Id be more inclined to set up a bank account with ING or similar, and made a weekly deposit into there, rather than pay pet insurance. FHRP
I have Pet Plan pet insurance on my youngest dog and will consider it for all future pups. Luckily I haven't had to claim much, last year I claimed about as much as I paid in premiums. If I had the self control to have a seperate account or credit card for vet bills only, I would probably do that instead. There are heaps of threads on here about Pet Insurance, a quick search will find them
MaKoda
We have it for our 2 Danes, we're with ProSure Pet Insurance & pay $37 p/mth for the first Dane & $33 p/mth for the second (10% discount for 2 or more pets). Ours has no excess on claims & covers 80% of the bill, although you do have to pay the vet account up front & ProSure then reimburse you. It is wise to get it when your pets are young, coz any previous or pre-existing aliments 'will not' be covered under the policy. Do your research though, there are lots of options out there. Rileys mum
Yep I have it for my 15 month old GSP and have had it since he was 12 weeks old. Personally I wouldn't be without it. I could never forgive myself if he needed some sort of expensive treatment/surgery and I couldn't afford it. I have the highest level cover for around $40 ish per month. To me its worth it. I think the key is to work out what's covered and see if it suits your needs. As others have said, Putting money away each pay is also another good option too. Staranais
Yes, definitely. I'm just not able to suddenly come up with hundreds or thousands of dollars if my dog should suddenly need it, so for us it's worth it. Do your research to get a good plan, though. SeeGee
With ours, we have to pay first, then claim back. I dont know of any pet cover that does differerntly?
Leema
I don't. Most insurance companies only cover desexed and annually-vaccinated pets. Mine are neither. I have a 'dog account' which I put money into weekly, but I'm pretty good at saving anyway so it's not really a big deal.
Staranais
My dog is neither desexed nor annual vaccinated, and they're happy to cover us? Perhaps it's different in Aussie.
Staff'n'Toller
They will cover non-vaccinated animals but they won't pay claims that have anything to do with Parvo, Distemper, Hepatitis or CC.
