Do You Let Your Dog On The Bed, And Do You Let Jump On And Off Themsel

Oh gosh, I just saw from inside the lounge room, my westie get onto the outdoor table by jumping onto a chair first and then the table top, sit there and look around enjoying the view, she then heard a neighbouring dog bark and just jumped straight off that table. Its double the height of the bed! I'll have to keep alll those chairs tucked right under the table.

Sorry Sky, I cant remember what my vet at the time said about jumping up exactly but I was told to stop Tyke from doing it incase he misjuged the height and fell back down/twisted.

Ill never forget the first time he hurt his back then he jamp off the sofa. He just wouldnt stop screaming and couldnt move his back end. I didnt drive then so I picked him up and ran all the way to the vet with tears streaming down my face whilst he screamed. It was horrendous, hence Ill never let my dogs to it again. He did it alot more times until he finally learned but atleast I had heavy pain meds on hand to give him until I could get him to the vet.

Bonnie has dislocated both knees from jumping off the outdoor table as a 7mth old pup. Hence even my big dogs arent allowed to jump unless they do it slowly.

I have never had a dog jumping up or down of the bed they all use the footstools we have alongside the beds. If by some chance the footstools have moved they soon let us know they can't get up or down.

Mine all get invited up before jumping on the bed or any furniture. We are shorties in this house and I must admit all our lounges and beds were purchased because they suited our height (ie legs don't dangle in the air when you sit on any of them) so perhaps they are a little shorter than what some have? I have never even thought of the damage jumping off might do.

I bought some stairs for my old girl a few years back but she refused to use them so I gave up. She is now lifted on and off the bed as she doesn't have the strength in her back legs anymore.

Does anyone else have a dog that kind of oozes off the lounge onto the carpet giving themselves a stretch and belly rub on the lounge as they go? I can't be the only one with a goober like that.

Yep! my Shar Pei pup (Although he's about 8 mths old now, so maybe teenager, LOL) does that on the odd occasion he is on the couch. Is hilariously slow motion!

The dog might be athletic - but jumping down repeatedly from a height like that will ruin their fronts - no matter how well constructed they are.

I think doing stuff like agility and flyball would be potentially be more damaging than jumping on and off a bed and plenty of dogs do those sports and remain sound.

in agility - dogs jump things that are at the right height for their size (there are height classifications) - and you are generally taught how to train your dog so they aren't injured. Jumping off something taller, like a bed is not the same for a small dog. Flyball might involve fast running, but it doesn't involve jumping off something high. the injuries that some dogs sustain are different.

in any event - talk to the chirovets who make a very nice living from dogs that do agility and flyball.

The OP was worried about smaller breeds of dogs jumping off things that are too tall - and they should be. Vets will tell you it is bad for them - for both their spine and their shoulders (and elbows).

Boonie (lab) jumps up if he's not feeling lazy.

He likes to use the getting off of the bed as a stretch though - slowly puts front feet down and drags himself off leaving his back half stretched to full until the last moment then plops them off. Really looks like he enjoys the stretch - holds it there for a bit longer sometimes to get the full effect.

so does mindy!!!

sorry guys, i didn't read the part about small dogs in particular :)

Yes, it would be bad for a small dog like a chi to be constantly jumping on and off a high bed. Every now and then wouldn't matter, but if it was daily, I would be looking to give them an alternative
