Im thinking about upgrading from my 350d that has done me well over the last 5 years. 7d is out of my price range, so Im looking at the 60D. These are easily the best action shots I've taken with it. It was the reason I wanted a 7D but I've had a long teething process getting used to it. ~*Shell*~ Posted March 24, 2011 Share Posted March 24, 2011 (edited) A friend at work has the 60D - i don't see much of a difference as far as the sharpness of it goes compared to the 40D or 50D. ISO it performs better at high ISO and the flip out screen is a good idea if you are wanting to get a photo at a strange angle but I wouldn't use it regularly - i'd still be a view-finder kind of girl. I don't think you'll be unhappy with it if you get the 60D. If you really want the 7D though, wait for a few months. There's no use buying the 60D if what you really want is the 7D. kja Posted March 24, 2011 Share Posted March 24, 2011 My bestie just had her new 60D arrive today. She hasn't played with it yet, but she tossed and turned about the 7D, too, and chose the 60D. I'll let you know what she thinks in a couple of weeks (if you wait that long) as she's taking it on a trip Monday for two weeks and has some opportunities to test it out in a nice variety of conditions. rubiton Posted March 25, 2011 Share Posted March 25, 2011 If you decide to go to the 7d remember you'll need to get an extra guide and relearn how to use the camera. The 7D is nothing like the 350D at all - its a huge leap from the 40D/50D series too. Once you set it up its great but getting it set up correctly for your own pics is the thing that takes a while. However I love the low light performance - most of the pics at the links below were taken with the new L 70-300mm in low light (so at least 1000 ISO). I didn't even think of the earthquake/tsunami pushing prices up on DWI!! I went to buy a lens yesterday I had my eye on for a while and it was more expensive than an Australian seller. I was confused because I remembered when doing research that it was the cheapest!! Thought I was going troppo!! Good luck with your choice Wags! It's a hard decision!! I said get the 7D because it's fun spending some one else's money For myself I really wanted the fast auto focus and fps because I've always had this obsession with capturing whippets in flight coming straight for me. I dont know why, I just love the intensity of them. My dear little 400D really couldn't give me what I wanted there although for many other things it was perfect and if it wasn't for this fixation I'd probably still be happily snapping away with the 400D. My 40D takes pics just fine and I had the 350D doing the big race meetings last year as I didnt trust the 50D and the 40D was away being fixed. IN my case the 7D has extra fps and the sports orientated features are fantastic as is the low light performance and the weatherproofing but then IM out in the stinking heat, rain, dust, dark, everything and its built to handle that. SOmeone wanting to take nice pics of family and pets really doesnt need to get a 7D and many would probably give up and put them in a cupboard as it is a complicated device until you learn howto make it work for what you want. I got the extra guide book as I was getting frustrated trying to set it up and I've been using DSLR cmaeras for 7 years and film cameras for many many years before that. All the SLRS take the same quality photos and even the most basic camera on the large jpeg setting will take photos that will print A3 size but the different series have different features and thats what you need to compare. The 7D has been marketed as a sports camera and thats is one thing it is better than the 60D series but the 60D has things like the swivel LCD screen and other stuff that non sports people might find more useful. Nothing is more of a waste than a high performance camera that is left in auto mode. Tess I use to try and explain that a 7D doesnt guarantee someone better photos than a 1000D etc but dont worry so much now and just always suggest to outlay for the books and that its a lot more complicated than the 40,50,60d Series. It's amazing how many real amateurs (by that I just mean, real newbies to photography) I see sporting 7Ds and yet they really could have saved their money and bought better lenses that really WOULD make a difference to their family and pet photography.
