Pneumonia

My gorgeous Quest, a full of life 7yr old aussie has pneumonia and is very very ill. She has been to the vet and had IV antibiotics and a host of pills but doesn't seem to be improving. in fact she is getting worse. It has been 36hours now and I was really hoping for some improvement but her temperature is soaring and I am very concerned. Has anyone else had this and how quickly did they improve?

My bitch got Pneumonia on top of KC when she was about 14 months old. She spent the night in emergency with a very high temp and elevated respiratory rate, I rushed her in at about 1am. Fortunately she responded well to the antibotics, fluids etc and came home the next day about 3pm. The vets were quite insistent about her staying overnight given her temperature though, they were worried about it going even higher. To be honest considering her respiratory rate I wouldn't have been comfortable taking her home, I would have just sat there and watched every breath.

Are you in a position to go back to the vet and perhaps have the antibiotics checked/changed?

I hope your girl responds soon and picks up quickly and she has no more of this

He has x-rayed her and done bloods but we won't get the results until tomorrow. One lung is all cloudy while the other one doesn't look too bad. I am not sure what exactly he has given her, he told me she had had iv antibiotics all day today and tonight I have brought her home as the clinic is unmanned and we have Baytril and Vetamox until she can go back in the morning. Her breathing is laboured and her temperature is soaring past anything I have ever had. It is a bit grim, she is just laying there panting and looks so sick.

She has been in at the vet all day. I picked her up after work as the clinic is unmanned overnight. How high did your girls temp get?

I have had a dog with it.

The vet new we would give the best care at home & as they get so depressed with it he agreed that the dog needed every bit of help it could get & was convinced he would die in his sleep & i could fully understand his belief

He lived another 4 yrs but did suffer from health issues as a result.

I did 24/7 care,he was made to walk every hour & we did gentle chest pats to ensure the phlegm was shifted.

We gave our boy noni juice (bloody gross but it helped) .

We made sure when he slept he wasn't flat so he had either a u shape pillow or similar.

My boy looked like death warm up but we stuck to making him get up even if assisted

My GSD gril had it and was so extremely ill her lung actually collapsed. She went to werribee and they actually thought they would have to remove part of the lung. But.... they took a sample biopsy and grew a culture of the "bugs" and then put her on specific antibiotics. she spent about a week in intensive care 24 hr supervision with oxygen. She came home with AB's and physio instructions and steam tents 3 times daily.

When she went back for her follow up visit the vet had all these students there ready to see the really sick GSD and could not get over how well she had recovered. Previous to this she had been sick on and off for 3 months. It was obviously the pnuemonia brewing but she would be on AB's for two weeks and come good and then when she was off them the pnuemonia would take hold agaain. After she fully recovered she was fine and never had a relapse and actually competed in obedience and agility.

Can you dampen the feet and tummy with a wet cloth? Do you also have a fan? It might help to keep the temp from rising further or at least give some relief.

I haven't had a dog with pneumonia but I have had a cat with it. She almost died, was very flat when I took her back to the vet. They injected fluids and she came good pretty quickly. Even though I had been syringing fluids into her, it wasn't enough.

Prayers and hugs for Quest and your night ahead

Thanks everyone. I propped Quest up between pillows last night and she seemed to rest a little easier. This morning she isn't coughing as much, just breathing very heavily and resting quietly. Not sure if that is an improvement or not but I have dropped her off at the vet where she will be getting fluids and more iv antibiotics today.

 Oh, I am so sorry Cowanbree :)

I went through the same thing with a ten week old puppy six weeks ago. He came down with kennel cough which quickly developed into pneumonia. He was on a drip for four days and I honestly gave up all hope of him surviving but against all odds he did. I read this thread last week but wasn't able to respond but I was hoping to come back and hear some good news :hitself:
