eic6
Hi all We are picking up our new puppy today (8weeks). However it will be over 2hrs in the car each way. We have a crate in the car and some treats for him. We were wondering if you guys could give us some advice to make the trip more comfortable for him. Also we have had some conflicting advice on what to do when we get home. Some people have said let him sleep where as other have advised us to familiarise him to the doggy friendly part of the home and begin toilet training. What do you think? Shelby
I wouldn't be giving him too many treats in the car in case he gets car sick. As to when you get home, start with the rules you want him to follow straight away and try and get a routine going. Let him explore on his own and be there to make sure he doesn't get any scares. Try and let him settle in before having lots of people come over to meet him. It is a strange and scary world away from mum and siblings. Don't forget - photos of new puppy to be posted here
Tintin Jac
Wow! Enjoy your new puppy. What are you getting? When we brought Tintin home, we expected him to be a bit unsure and overwhelmed by such a huge, sudden change in his life. We were so wrong! Like you, we got him from a couple of hours away so it was quite a drive for a little tike. He was so excited and so confident when we arrived home. He strutted around like he knew the place and us well. We didn't give him anything to eat or drink on the trip. He slept pretty much the whole way. He was pretty much toilet trained when he came home and asked to go outside from the start. Have a great time. There is nothing quite like watching a puppy as it learns about this big, wide world
Bluefairy
I also have had several dogs that I have had to travel hours to get. As we use harnesses in the back seat with a blanket on the seat, the pups have not been any trouble, they snuggle into the girls and they keep them company on the trip. We stop several times for toilet stops and a drink of water, no food though as this can make them sick. Once home I take them outside to see if they want to go to the toilet. Then I bring them in and allow them to go in the dog friendly areas. I allow days to familiarise them with everything.....its a huge new world they have come into, so expect mistakes, being scared, excited, laid back, and sleepy within a short time. Good luck with your new puppy and yes pictures are a must here. BF
becks
Pup will be fine to just travel in the crate or on someones knee on the trip home (some settle better on a knee). take straight outside when you get home so pup can toilet, then let them follow you back inside the house and show them the water bowl. Feed when it is next feed time according to breeders schedule. Leave it a few days before having friends around to meet pup. Book vet check asap to be sure pup is OK and have first injection if not already done.
Whippetsmum
I hope this advice is un needed, but just in case........mine didn't travel well at all, and it was only 60 minutes. When we picked up our pup almost 12 months ago, we should have taken lots and lots of towels, in fact, we should have layered the crate/car with them so that each and every time she threw up we could peel away a layer. And a drop sheet under the crate in case someting leaks. And don't forget to take wet wipes or damp towels in case you need to clean the pup after a mess. Good luck

I had one like that once. It was a German Shepherd pup and he continued to be car sick until he was 7 years old. Despite giving him ginger to help settle his tummy. He didn't throw up with ginger but d r o o l e d sooooo much ! YUK. It was only when I met my OH that he stopped being car sick! Harley ardored by new beau so much that he even willingly got into a car and jumped up on the back of a station wagon for the first time just so he could go 'rides' him him.
