Kennel Cough

I have a 2yr old pure breed Jack Russell, I took him to the vets to get his immunisation & kennel cough neddles. The kennell cough was done differently to last year, instead of a needle they inserted the liquid into his nose.

2 days later he started showing symptoms of kennel cough. It mainly affects him early hours of the morning. This morning about 4.30am he started and it seemed to go on for longer than it had since Sunday. It is more of a dry cough. :(:)

I am a bit worried about taking him back to the vets as he doesn,t like them, as he had a bad experience last time, when he cut his leg and needed stitches. They make him very upset and i dont want to put him through it unless i really have too.

I looked up home remedies on internet, one was to give them honey or chicken soup but does this really work?

Honey will sooth his throat, so yes, a teaspoon every few hours is good. Ordinary honey is fine, if you can get some Active Manuka Honey from a health food shop, that's even better as it promotes a healthy immunity.

Never heard about the chicken soup for a dog although I am sure he would enjoy it!

What a dreadful experience your dog has had at the vets  I would go armed with his favourite toy or the best treats next time and any other time you have to go back. He needs to learn it's OK to visit the vet.

I had problems many years ago with one of my dogs with a hacking cough. I couldnt get to a vet and it was getting worse. One of my kids asked why they couldnt have my "witch's brew" like they did when they were sick.

I thought about it and decided to give it a try.

Basically its equal part of apple cider vinegar and honey - put into a jar and shake til combined. I diluted it 1:1 with boiled water and syringed it into their mouth, It doesnt taste too nice - lol, but when I eventually got to our vet they said I had probably saved it's life, as it also had a form of tonsilitis as well.

I also used this remedy on our cat when it got cat flu - yes they still can get it even if vacinated.

It certainly wont hurt them and the honey and vinegar will help to kill any germs in the throat.

Cheers
