Whats The Best Collar And Lead?

Rogz make some great puppy collars and leads, but for a GSD pup you would be better off with their adult collars and leads. They are nice and light and tend to 'grow' well with pup's.

We use a Rogz collar and harness on our pups because they are fully adjustable and grow with them. We use an adult leather leash from Dogquip that can adjust from 1.5 metres to 3 metres. We couldn't justify a light weight leash for a German Shepherd pup because they grow so fast.

Pup is German shepherd.

While growing - good quality adjustable flat collar and lead. Something like a Blackdog one?

Once grown, good quality leather collar (if no correction collar is needed) and lead. K9Pro would be a good source.

We like the Rogz collar and lead sets  Heaps of nice colours and patterns to chose from and they are adjustable enough to last awhile. I especially like that the collars are designed to keep the pressure off the buckle, which is the weakest point.

Wow thanks everyone for the replies looks like a few of you are recommending the Rogz so will have a look at them.

Ish - so so cute how old is your pup in these pics? What size so you think I should get or would I be better waiting for pup to come home and try them on him? (Can you get them in pet shops?)

Just make sure it is big enough :mad , when Morgan came home he had a medium size cheap leather collar and he out grew it so fast. Now he has a nylon padded collar with a belt type buckle, it's actually a little big on him but it will do until I'm sure he's stopped growing :mad It is very secure and he seems comfortable in it, but his next one will be a proper leather collar and lead set I think. His lead is a cotton one I got at training (which I usually use with his check chain), and I like how comfortable it is to hold, and it's not too long either. He also has an extendible lead which I only use when we are alone and roaming about in the wilderness with his flat collar, he's not a puller but I don't want to risk him snapping it and frightening anyone. He's really friendly, but not everyone appreciates a large dog running over to say hi :mad

Grats on the new puppy, and beware the teething stage :mad:mad

For walking an adjustable martingale collar is great. Grows with the puppy and can be adjusted to fit snuggly so they can't slip out of it like they can with a normal flat collar.

If you are leaving a collar on the dog then a soft flat adjustable collar is fine.

He was around 8 weeks in those pics. I think its the size they generally recommend for beagles etc (there are breed recomendations on the back of the tag) but as someone else suggested, you can take pup in to try collars on - good opportunity for some socialising!

Our current pup has one of the Rogz chain martingale collars and thats been good too :mad

So much to chose from, have fun shopping!!! :mad

Ask your breeder to measure pup's neck for you... otherwise if you took the pup with you to Petstock, you'd be able to take the dog in with you to get the right sizing. I'm glad I got my breeder to measure my boys neck, as he needed a collar at the airport.. his neck ended up being too big for a puppy collar :mad

After having my little mini schnauzer get out of a collar with a plastic buckle (and try to run onto train tracks mind you) I would never, ever use a plastic buckle ever again - especially for a strong dog like a GSD.

Personally, I'd 'waste" a bit of money and get a decent quality one now, rather than something that looks pretty. The K9Pro ones are a good price.

I had my two pups in martingale [one is a rogz] from puppies. They are adjustable and grew with the pups. Ivy still wears hers now, just over two years ago.

Never used a plastic buckle collar as I don't trust their strength.

My Pointer now wears a full leather collar when we go out and his rogz at the beach as it seems to handle the sand/salt a lot better.

Rogz are wash and wear

eta - my dogs don't wear collars whenever they are at home.
