Surgical Ai Problems

I'm having some dramas with my bitch at the moment that was surgically AI'd on Saturday.

Bearing in mind she is a real sook, she is currently experiencing a lot of pain and swelling on one side that extends out to the rise where her hip joins her body (this is not where the incision is). She seemed much better yesterday :)

Another thing is that the stitches are irritating her skin on either side of the incision - I guess the ends need to be that length but it must feel like fishing line scratching and poking into her. Any advice on what I can do about this would be very much appreciated!

Yes, I spoke to the vet this morning but don't want to ring again just about the stitches.

On the plus side she still has a good appetite (a adult beagle has to be on their death bed not to eat) and no temp and I have given her some Medacam this morning.

I think with the pain and stress things are not going to be positive here.

The transcervical AI sounds wonderful!

I am trying a transcervical with my Pug bitch next time. I only know of one breeder using a surgical AI and she had great success. All you can do is ring the vet tommorrow morning and discuss her discomfort with him.

I would be taking her in to see the vet for that swelling. there shouldn't be any swelling after a surgical AI, apart from the incision site, with the very occasional bitch having a localised reaction to suture material or a seroma.

Fifi - thanks :)

I looked up "seroma" and it could well be that! It almost feels like mastitis but not in the teats but above them. Its not hard or hot and feels like fluid.

I am taking her in tomorrow morning to have her looked at. She does seem to be in less pain than she was this morning but that may be down to the anti-inflammatory I gave her. Because her gums were good, no temp and a good appetite I have left getting her checked until I felt I could move her on my own - she screamed when I picked her up, which she didn't do yesterday when I had to move her.

I did call into the surgery this afternoon and picked up some amoxyclav for her just to be on the safe side. I know it is not ideal to be giving antibiotics but thought it might be safest option even though there is no sign of infection. He also gave me something to cover the areas that are very red and irritated near the sutures to stop them rubbing. Hope it sticks.

I must stress that I don't believe this problem is related to the vet who did the procedure. I just don't want to drive the 1 hour over to the surgery in the heat we are currently experiencing.

I trust my local vet to check her out.

Hopefully a seroma & not hernia. I would have her on AB's too. quite a few vets will put them on AB's as a matter of course after a surgical AI. I think vets a divided on the merits of this.

hope all is well :-)

Thank you!

Well it is all a bit of a mystery.

After a lot of indecision about where to take her, I took her back to the vet surgery where the AI was done.

They are not sure what is going on with her. They can feel the swelling but everything feels intact as far as they can tell. They confirmed that her general health is good and apart from the obvious pain she is in they are not sure what is wrong with her. They did suggest that perhaps she has torn a muscle but I'm not sure if that explains the enlarged gland (or that's what it feel like). She doesn't have mastitis so I don't know what it is. She has general swelling both sides but on the lump side it extends out to her flank and from the side it makes her look 4-5 weeks in whelp. She keeps turning around looking at herself even when walking and licking the swollen areas. The incision sutures are fine.

She is eating, drinking, weeing and pooing - although the last comes with sound effects with the effort.

Until the medacam kicked in late this morning, I would have sworn she was on her death bed. Even my OH was freaked out. She didn't want to move out of her crate at all and I nearly had to drag her out to toilet.

I am going to keep her crated until Thursday (unless things get worse) and if there is no improvement will investigate further then. I don't know what else to do! I am hesitant about taking her elsewhere, not because of possible puppies as I couldn't care less about that at present, but if a reproduction vet doesn't know what is wrong, who else will :mad

I had this problem with one of my bitches, turned out it was an allergic reaction to the suture material.

You beat me to it.
