Rebanne
We have a litter of puppies who are nearing 8 weeks with no firm interest either. I have been considering a very carefully-worded ad in the Trading Post (based on the assumption that if we want members of the public to know about quality, purebred dogs then we have to advertise where they are looking) - but it is hard to take that step when a search for puppies of your breed on the Trading Post site turns up some in a Victorian petshop and some person locally who just wants to "borrow" a dog for breeding (doesn't care if it's one breed or another "similar" one). all the more reason to go for it IMO
SwaY
I had a look at your listing, you don't list colours or sexes perhaps this would encourage more enquiries? I have plenty of enquiries, just not the homes I want for this puppy.
SwaY
Sorry this is a little OT Why don't breeders advertise in the Trading Post or Petlink? This is where puppy buyers go, makes sense to advertise there. Show pet people where they can get registered puppies from - go to the buyers. Kustali
Sway i totally agree! Find all the free advertising sites you can and put an add up! Trading post you have to pay, but i had some good enquiries from there, Gumtree is free, Petlink is free....it can't hurt! There are LOTS of puppy sites out there to advertise on. The Quokka is free to advertise in, call them and place an advert, lots of people buy that paper here in W.A. SwaY
Petlink is full of breeders we don't want to be associated with, I understand that. Flush them out, make registered pure breeds the norm over there. I advertise out Dane club shows and when we will be at the Royal over there. We get quite a few interested emails and people on the day tell us how they found us.

oakway
A big hurdle is our location. Being in Darwin and so far away, the freight costs scare people off. Hi Megs, I would be inclined to say it just the location and the breed. If they had been X bred pig dogs they would have gone like like hot cakes, but being beautiful Pointers most would not be interested or know what great dogs they are. lappiemum
Most of our inquires came via our webpage - but it is important that when people google your breed your kennel name comes up quickly. There are ways to do this, it all relies on your website traffic and making your site worth visiting (and revisiting). I had a number of inquiries through DOL as well, but mostly in the forums rather than just through advertising. It may be different for my breed though
TrinaJ
Most of my inquiries came from DOL or other breeders referring puppy people onto me. Dogs Victoria offeres FREE listing of puppies to their members, perhaps your Kennel Club offers the same free listing on their website, wouldn't hurt to try. Have you thought of getting in contact with a Pointer club in another state? ie one in QLD, they 'may' allow you to place an ad on their site for a fee if you are a registered breeder? (I dont really know though, just an idea) Perhaps in future advertise upcoming mating on your website PRIOR to mating the bitch that way you may have people lined up before the puppies are born. Most of mine were reserved before they were born. Good luck and I hope you find suitable homes for all of the beautiful puppies ETA: looking at the ad perhaps try and promote yourkennell and the puppies a little more with some basic information like I have listed below: Will the puppies be microchipped prior to going to their new home? Are they vaccinated, wormed, well socialised, have they been raised with children, are you a member of your State Kennel Council if so state that you adhere to their Code of Ethics (if you do), do they come with a comprehensive puppy pack? Are they being offered to show/pet and working homes? Have both Sire and Dam passed the required heath tests for Pointers? Will the puppies be registered on Main or Limited Registration? (I dont really know though, just an idea) Unfortunately we dont have any breed clubs for pointers anywhere in Australia. They can be a hard breed to home, as Joe Public dont really know much about the breed, that is if they know they exist in the first place. Then some of the enquiries you do get you wouldnt sell a goldfish to them let alone a puppy!! On top of that its a breed blessed with large litters, and having a fair few breeders with litters on the ground at the moment doesnt help either. I'm happy to send you any enquiries I get and I'm sure if you post something in the pointer forum many of the others will do the same Good luck, I hope they all find wonderful homes. TrinaJ
That's a shame. I know all about not selling some people a gold fish either, you should hear some of the inquiries Rottweiler breeders get Another thought......as Pointers are a gun dog, perhaps advertising in some hunt clubs in your area would help??? Could you try here: this was on the dol breed page (I removed addresses) •Meeting Point (A quarterly magazine for ALL Pointer owners/lovers) Contact : Alison Green - QLD - Email: [email protected] or Jane Vickers email: [email protected] •The Pointer Club Inc (New Zealand) C/- Megan Rogan Mataura 9712 Southland NZ Email : [email protected] Edited March 1, 2011 by TrinaJ
LizT
How about putting in an ad with the Sports Shooters Association? Or Gun Clubs?? Isn't it ironic that large breed have lots of pups and small breeds have few and it's the littlies that are easiest to home. When I bought a GSD 20 years ago the breeder offered me the last pup (bitch) along with the male I purchased as I think he'd had a litter of 18 and was "over it". I declined because I only wanted to take on one dog at a time. I have an aquanitance who breeds Show Greyhounds and she says it's a very hard breed to home as puppies. Hotwyr
Interesting stuff - it seems to me that there are always heaps of Pointer litters about - certainly here in NZ at any given time there are. Some breeders even having 4-6 litters per year - a flooded market must make it darn difficult to sell pups. In saying that I don't breed til I have a good list of people wanting a pup. This current litter I had 13 buyers (8 wanted dogs!!!) I have 8 bitches LOL....... But at 5 weeks old - I have sold them all anyway. I don't advertise anywhere except my website so any orders or enquiries are word of mouth or off the website. I have a breed that is not all that popular BUT manage to have many hunters keen. Last litter of 8 all went to hunters. This litter is 7 to hunters and 1 to a Vet...... Good Luck with your pups tho Megz.......you have some big names in your breed selling too - prob not a help either.
