laeral Posted February 27, 2011 Share Posted February 27, 2011 (edited) So I was watching Send in the Dogs tonight and it got me thinking about police dogs and their handlers. I was wondering if someone who has some knowledge in the area could answer a couple of questions, or three Realisticaly is it dam hard to get into the dogs squad? Or would it be a realistic goal for someone entering the police force. What sort of requirements are there for acceptance? Are the dogs able to live in a home with another dog? or would the handlers have to have no other dogs before joining the dog squad? What happens to the dogs when they retire? I imagaine the handlers would become really attached to them after working so closely with them for so long. Edited cos I have shocking spelling! Dogsrawesome Posted February 27, 2011 Share Posted February 27, 2011 i know question 2 but not the others haha, Pretty sure the dog comes home with you and you have to have a secure dog run of some sort but no sure if your allowed another dog but i wouldnt see a problem. emery Posted February 27, 2011 Share Posted February 27, 2011 my husband looked inot htis mounted and water police. he spoke to a cop and if i remember you have to be a land base cop for several years before applying for one of the special areas. The jobs in these parts of the force only come available very rarely so you could work for 20 years before a position is vacant. What sort of requirements are there for acceptance? As with any specialist policing unit it is fairly hard to get in to. It can be a realistic goal but it is a long term goal and you need to work with this in mind. The best way is to volunteer at training and take part in associated activities within the dog unit eg: puppy raising programs. You generally need 3 years general duties experience before applying for specialist units. Are the dogs able to live in a home with another dog? or would the handlers have to have no other dogs before joining the dog squad? The dogs can live with another dog in the household. What happens to the dogs when they retire? I imagaine the handlers would become really attached to them after working so closely with them for so long. The handlers are given the option of keeping the dog, second preference goes to other handlers / members in the police force who are willing to own the dog. to train the police dogs do you have to be in the dog squad before hand or can you just do say a course that ables you to train them?sorry to add another question but i want to train police dogs haha A couple of states hire people without police dog handling experience to work as trainers. Haven't read other replies but will say, numerous members of my family have been/are members of Vic Police. ALL joined the queue for the dog squad (we are a 'doggy' family!) ALL of them met the requirements of the squad. ALL have left the force after many years, or are still in the queue, such is the demand for admission into the dogs. Certainly a realistic goal for a new member, but be prepared for a looooooooong wait! I think you would have to want to do all areas of policing work, rather than just work within the dog squad, because you will be doing many years of that work first, if you even ever got into the dogs. Think Im a little old for delusions of working in the dog squad anyway (Oh that hurts to have to admit!). Id have to pass basic training first Do they have a couple of police dogs next to you poodlefan? Great to know they live happily with the Italian Greyhounds. If it was a career I would ever think about, it would probably have been a deal breaker if I couldnt have my own dog first, or have to give it up for the police dog. Two GSDs - one is now retired. Both are fine with the IGs but not with one another. One of the IGs likes to worm his way into the working GSD's run and crash out with him.
