poodlefan
Hey guys, it's advertising...all they care is that you remember the ad was about adopting a blonde..or speed dating or something like that at some place called RSVP I think?????.Where's my beer? That's a James Boag beer isn't it? Or XXXX - they have good ads. Mind you no one's ever going to top that Carlton one filmed on the NZ South Island to the music of O Fortuna from Camina Buruana. That was AWESOME!!
SkySoaringMagpie
The RSPCA is pitching to potential dog owners more than die hard dog tragics like we forum members. Now I want the Gruen Transfer to analyse this ad! It does seem to have piqued buyer interest in Afghan Hounds. By the way, who are you calling tragic? Once I've finished doing the judges' books for the show, groomed three dogs for the Royal, cleaned up the guest bathroom for our Afghan's breeder who is staying with us for the weekend and packed the dog trailer then you just watch out! I figure if a clearly very well cared for purebred dog can get people thinking about sourcing their next dog from a shelter or the RSPCA, it can't be a bad thing. Lets hope that it doesn't result in Afghans becoming the new flavour of the month as they were for a while in the 70's. I doubt it though. poodlefan
I love the Carlton Ad.. best ad ever!! That was brand promotion at its finest. They weren't trying to get you to try beer. They were planning on making you look for Carlton beer when you opened up the door of the fridge with a bunch of beer brands on display. Taking that analogy to the current ad. The RSPCA isn't necessarily urging you to buy a dog. What they are trying to do is, if you want a dog, to buy a dog from them. jacqui835
When I first saw the ad a few days back I thought , Yeah sure!... you're not going to get a purebred perfectly groomed dog from the RSPCA. I have seen very, very few that even look purebred. I don't like the ad. It feels too deceiving. Guys I don't think the aim of the ad was to say, oh look, you can get a beautiful perfectly groomed dog from us. I think they were just trying to attract attention, and yeah, their advertising/marketing guy probably knows little with the exception that the company attempts to rehome animals. What's the bet they don't even know what breed it is... My family are all dog owners but I can safely say not one of them would be able to identify the hound firstly as a purebred and secondly as Afghan. SkySoaringMagpie
I think LizT is right tho', the old chestnut about the Afghan being mistaken for an attractive blonde is an attention grabber but I think the product itself gets rather lost. I'd be interested to know what your average punter would take away from that ad in terms of recall.

An ad that doesn't leave you remembering the brand or product it promotes is a failure That's like the "Bankworld" ads to me. I know Barbara is from Bankword and I love the ads but for the life of me I can't remember what actual bank runs the ads. Lhok
A friend of mine watched the ad and went to the local RSPCA shelter looking for the dog on the ad, when she couldn't find that type of dog at the shelter she later rang me up and asked if I knew where she could get such a "glamorous" dog from. So I think the whole thing was a bit lost on her I'm now trying to educate her on Afghans someone care to help me with it Also that carlton draught ad was awesome and I "think" the bank world ads are for the ANZ, if it is they should have just stuck to the falcon ads they ran for their credit cards. --Lhok

Well, to me the aim of the ad was "Go to the RSPCA to get a dog that fits your life style. I am sure that is possible but seeing that most are mixed breeds it would be very difficult to assess, unless each dogs character has been studied/tested (maybe they do this I don't know). So to me it's still a bit misleading.
casowner
My kitten was used in a billboard RSPCA adopt a pet campaign a couple of years ago and he is a burmese cross. The kitten was suspended and looked like he was being picked up by a computer mouse (obviously photoshopped the person holding him). I saw the billboard all over Adelaide for nearly 12 months and thought it wasn't the ideal advertising for the RSPCA rspca_billboard_3350x12660.pdf

poochmad
I like the ad for what it is, as a humorous way to find your 'mate'. Sure, I know you're not going to find a dog of that breed at the RSPCA, but it's not meant to be taken serioulsy.

dog geek
This is what an Afghan from the RSPCA looks like: Mind you, he did end up looking somewhat like the glamourous hound from the RSPCA Just took a few hundred woman hours, a diet attended to with more care than is shown for visiting royalty, and an inordinate amount of conferencing about which "*product* to try next... Wyntervale
This is what he looked like after living with Sir WJ and I for a little while: Now he is in a super loving home and doing brilliantly. Diablo is also an RSPCA Afghan Hound, but he was much younger.... and the car trip home with him was much more pleasant than the trip home with Horace who had been desexed and while still half sedated rolled through his own piss and shit... and we had to take him in the car that way on a hot summer day. I'm not sure that's the picture of perfection people will be looking for after that ad.
koalathebear
As has been pointed out, most people take ads with a fairly liberal pinch of salt ... One might argue that those ads where you see dogs dancing around, answering the phone, mowing the lawn and doing all sorts of amazing things are also misleading because people will think that all dogs can do that Or deodorant ads that make people irresistible ...
