Mason_Gibbs
I bathed my dog today as he has had a weird smell about him the last few days, so I bathed him and the smell is still lingering, it is not strong at this stage but how do I know if its coming from his anal glands?? He has had his emptied once before as a young pup but I cant remember what he smelled like then.
poodlefan
I'd describe it as very pungent, very organic and somewhat metallic.
dee lee
Lol, if you have to ask, then it's not the anal glands!!! Sorry, the smell makes me gag. Seriously, it's like a baaaad fart but also a little sweet smelling. Its REALLY funky- like something is rotting. Weirdly though, I can never see any leakage or smell where it comes from. Well except when the vet relieves them- My vet is a saint- he didn't charge me to do it last time...
julzjc
Off tuna!!! Bonnie tends to express them herself when she gets too excited, only lasts a couple hours, Thank heavens! Well....unless she does is in the car, all over her lead and all over the car boot like she did the other day . Spent a looonnggg time trying to deoderise the car that day with carpet cleaner (not that you could see anything). ETA~ Perhaps it doesnt last a few hours but that how long she stays outside for until she is "clean" again lol. ~Anne~
The smell doesn't change from when they are normal or when they need emptying. If his anal sacs need expressing, you might notice some swelling of the glands around the ring of the anus and possibly some leakage.
Mason_Gibbs
Took the dog to the vet and it was not anal glands, no bacterial overgrowth etc on his skin either so I am just washing him in Malaseb, the smell is only around his lumber sacral region apparently there are a lot of sabaceous glands there.... Kirty
Smells like off fish combined with rotten garbage that has been fermenting for a few months... Seriously disgusting! I had a huge dog empty his glands on me today! Ahh the joys of nursing! LOL!
kazads
The smell is nothing I have ever smelt before. I have a Great Dane who has issues and I have to express them every 4-6 weeks. Takes me days to work up to it.....
MsKatie
I think that sums up my experience of them - all over my chair!!!!
