Eating Poo!

I was surprised and grossed out to get a lick on the face from my 4 m/o boy tonight that smelt like poo.

He's never eaten his own poo before! Why now? And why did he have to kiss me straight after?

Is this abnormal? Should I take him to the vet?

I hear some dogs just do it for no particular reason, or whatever reason it's not "serious".

Maybe just clear his poo away - composter or dispose of it somehow (even in your backyard) or watch him when he goes to discourage the behaviour with a "uh uh".

Pick it up and he won't have the opportunity.

What are you feeding him. A lot of the time a dog will learn this behaviour off another dog, but if he's an only dog then he has probably started doing it because what is coming out still smells like food to him. Eating what they view as food is a normal canine behaviour.

A vet visit is unnecessary, he's behaving like a DOG. Search here and you'll get lots of suggestions.

Many people in this forum have suggested adding a bit of pineapple juice to the food. Apparently it stops them from eating poo.

I think it is important to feed a diet that gets digested well. Then the poo is not going to smell like food to them. If you are feeding kibble, get a high quality kibble. Raw meat/bones are good as well.

I feed my dogs Canidae grain free salmon kibble (this also lists pineapple juice as one of the ingredients) as well as barf patties and bones. My dogs have never attempted to eat poo.

Pineapple juice, chunks of pineapple and even special powders (you can get from the vet) can all be given to the dog in its food to stop it eating its own poo.

It is pretty gross to us, but fairly normal for dogs. There are a number of reasons why a dog may eat poo-

Lacking something in its diet

Boring diet

Boredom

It tastes good to them!

My puppy was also a poo-eater. We found a change of diet from a supermarket brand to a premium brand (advance) as well as adding a probiotic powder to her food seemed to help stop this problem.
