A friend's been asking me about lenses. I know a couple of you have got a Sigma 70-200 but there's 2 models, which one have you got and what is the difference with them, apart from the obvious - price.

I don't own either, but have looked at both online. The second as OS - Optical Stabilization. I assumed it is like looking at the Canon's 70-200 with and without IS?? I'll also be intersted to hear from who use these lenses.

that's right - the dear one has OS

I have three Sigma lenses, including the 70 - 200 without OS.

My fave is the 30mm 1.4

ETA - when I use the 100mm for "fast dogs" I turn the IS off, so I think the 70-200 without OS would be fine for fast dogs, as the OS wouldn't be much use ???

I think Bec bought one too but I dont know if she's posted pics here using it. I'd like to know what she thinks of it. My friend has whippets as well. I'm wondering how good it would be for capturing them at full pelt.

Well mine is fine for catching greyhounds at full pelt - I guess the lens is only as good as the operator :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I have the following in Sigma flavoured glass

18-55 2.8 DG HSM

24-70 2.8 EX DG HSM

85 1.4 EX DG HSM

70-200 2.8 EX DG HSM MACRO

I do like my Sigma glass, and in some cases it is the same or better than Nikon (24-70 for example is the same, 85 1.4 is better) but then they don't do some lenses as well... hence why the 50 1.8 I have is Nikon, as is the 14-24 2.8.

I must say though that the new 70-200 EX DG OS HSM is overpriced for what it delivers... for the extra money you are better off getting the Nikon 70-200 VRII, or for the same money a good quality 2nd hand version of the 70-200 VRI. It also depends on how you shoot, what you are shooting and when!
