It looks absolutely shocking. OMG.

I've just come back from two weeks holiday in Queenstown. Every time we went through a tunnel or in a cave the possibility of an earthquake was in our minds. My mum just rang me to find out whether we were home or not. She was very upset as she was worried we were still there. :)

I arrived back to the television reporting this. How horrific.

My thoughts are with all those in New Zealand and those affected by the quake.

Where's Staranais? Are you safe?

Yeah, thanks Erny - we barely felt it up here. :)

I've heard from most my mates down there & they're are all safe, pity not everyone in Chch was as lucky.

Do we have any Chch DOLers?

Relieved to hear from you Staranais - glad to hear you're untouched and the same for your friends. Thinking of all others at this time and hoping to hear a continuous news stream reporting of lives found and saved.

kiwioz works in Christchurch and lives just outside and there are others.

Kiwioz posted on the thread in Off topic and is ok :(

How devestating though for everyone

It has really been one disaster after another atm. And then the government issues in other parts of the world too :)

Heard about if at work from a customer who's eyes were red and puffy from crying and couldn't get on the computer quick enough when I got home to check on friends over there. Hadn't even seen the devestation at that stage but after viewing the footage on TV have to say I've shed quiet a few of my own tears. What is going on with the world at the moment, this year has been one disaster after another, begining to believe those people that say the world ends on Dec24 2012. Its certainly starting to feel like its falling apart.

Thinking of everyone affected by this and hoping you all stay safe.

The death toll has apparently reached 65. :(

SAR people such as myself are on call to go down, but probably won't be called upon - my thoughts are with the Urban SAR teams & rescue services who will be doing a pretty upsetting job & seeing some pretty horrible things tonight.

The ACT is sending specialist urban/building search firies tonight.

They can pull people out of these sorts of situations for days after the event. Fingers crossed that many more emerge alive from the rubble.

Julia Gillard said something a few days ago that resonated with me and is particularly relevant to what's happening now. It was something along the lines of:

"Australia has many ties with other countries but only New Zealand is family".

Hear hear.

A sentiment I have held since I can remember. Well coined by Julia and I second PF's "hear hear".
