Residents weigh-in on dog control

Mat Nott | 19th February 2011

A child’s pet dog was killed by vicious dogs from next door.

Alistair Brightman%3Cbody%3E%3Cdiv%20id%3D%22node%22%3E%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A//data.apn.com.au/apnau/adclick/FCID%3D-4/SIZE%3DZ325X200/random%3D85727969464/viewid%3D85727969464/site%3DZAUREGFRASERCOASTCHRONICLE/area%3DZAUREGFRASERCOASTCHRONICLE.NEWS.COUNCILNEWS.STORY.HME/keyword%3Dfraser-coast-chronicle%22%20target%3D%22_top%22%3E%3Cimg%20src%3D%22http%3A//content.aimatch.com/default.gif%22%20alt%3D%22%22%20border%3D%220%22%20%3E%3C/a%3E%20%20%3C/div%3E FRASER Coast mayor Mick Kruger has weighed into the current controversy over dog control by calling on residents worried by dog attacks to propose new dog control measures for council.

Mr Kruger said public submissions for changes to local laws governing animals could be made until January 25 as part of the council's review process.

He also suggested that as little as 12 submissions could have enough weight in light of recent events to provoke a change of local laws concerning dog ownership.

“Now that people are aware that we are reviewing the local laws, and one of them relates to animals, if people are concerned they should have a look at what the local law says,” Mr Kruger said.

“If they believe that it is not strong enough based on these sorts of attacks, they should put a submission in suggesting to council that it needs to be strengthened.” .

Given recent events in which hunting dogs leapt a fence in Urangan and killed a small dog and reports of dog attacks emerging from Dundowran Beach, Mr Kruger said council was already looking closely at the issue of dog ownership and control.

One current issue is the type of dog permitted to be kennelled in urban areas, with public opinion moving towards a ban on dogs that are bred to hunt and kill.

“The council would be prepared to review the breed of dogs that should be allowed in urban areas,” Mr Kruger said.

“If we get a dozen submissions and they give a strong indication that heavier penalties are needed then we can consider taking action.”

Submissions can be made via the council website at frasercoast.qld.gov.au or at the council chambers.

Is it public opinion or the opinion of somebody in council that there needs to be a ban on dogs that are bred to "hunt and kill"? As far as I know terriers are usually bred to hunt and kill, cats are bred to hunt and kill but pig hunting dogs are certainly not bred to kill anything. Hopefully this doesnt see the introduction of any silly knee jerk laws or a revist to the unworkable world of BSL.

I was going to post this! Yesterdays paper had an article about a Bullmastiff type dog come from the water and attacking another ladies dogs. She or someone else went on to put up posters around the beach it happened with a picture of a Bullmastiff on it saying to watch out for a dog like this as it will attack. Apparently others have come forward to say they have also had their dogs attacked. It makes me sick, I own and a breeder of Bullmastiffs and to go plastering my breed around the town like its a killer has me fuming. I feel sick and I am scared for my dogs and my breeds future :( ;) :grouphug:

Deja vu.

Why describe the dog as a ''type'' at all, why not just ''a large mongrel dog ran out of the surf & attacked.....'' etc, etc.

This same problem was recently highlighted regarding the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Breed misidentification, it is the biggest single threat facing the owners/breeders of registered pure breeds today. Especially the Bull breeds. God love ém.

Bogan owners will be the death of dog ownership.

And they are coming to a town near you.

Kaffy, I love Bull Mastiffs so please dont be offended but when I read a "Bullmastiff type came from out of the water and attacked her dog" I could not help but think she has a Bull Mastiff confused with a Dugong. Wouldnt be the first time somebody was WAY off the mark with breed ID!

Dog control can only work when people concentrate on the problem and the human behaviour associated with it ie dogs attacking other animals bacause their owners do not properly control them, rather than trying to "profile attackers" that may or may not become offenders in the future.

damn, could not get yesterdays paper, will have to see if someone else has one.

The dog sports thing was actually a letter to the editor. we had a coomp here and there was a story abouut it with photos and comments, inc stuff about stretches etc. good story.

some twit decided it was cruel and said things about 'dragging dogs all over the countryside', forcing them to over exercise (or else why would they need to stretch?) and it got worse. Cannot remember it all, I may have it around but I think I threw it out. I answered it, as usual. I am one of those pain in the backside letter writers (re animal stuff)

It was in the Fraser coast chronicle, I really do not remember the date, sorry. I'll have a look around and see if I still have it.

I really need this latest 'attack' article so I can write about it. Is that all of it in this thread? I also have to quote the date etc. it was in, was it yesterdays paper? Any inof appreciated. I'll take a look at the website, but sometimes stuff is missing...

Kaffy, dont worry too much, no news = this crap...

OK thanks! If something turns up would ge great to read it, I am just on the outlook for any movement in the area of making participation ins dog sports an act of cruelty, there are actually a lot of animal right folks who think this. There has been some activity in the area of rhetoric and public statements planting the idea, as you said not true stements making it look like something it is not and do not to forget the recent RSPCA ban on flyball at their activites in SA because playing with a ball was dangerouse. All dog owners need to keep very alert on this topic.

I agree shortstep, mine do flyball and agility, there really are some nutters out there!!

Kaffy, I cannot find the article about the dog and beach attack? I've looked through the webiste of the paper and also trawled through over 50 pages of council animal laws to see what laws theya re thinking of changing re submissions. Pretty much smoke and mirrors.. Have an eye problem ATM and I can't see properly yet so I'm having all sorts of issues.. :) but will attemtp to get someting together later today. Saw the 'file' pic with the dog kill article which appears to be a ban dog of some type,(pointer/grey?) I have no idea why they put up file pics for this stuff, it's completely meaningless.
