BJean
Miley seems to have an infection of some type in her ears.I've been told it will cost up to $150 to get them fixed (consultation and medication) but my vet no longer does accounts. I used always pay Try canastan cream. If it doesn't clear the (most likely) fungal infection in your dogs ears then it wont do them any harm ether. LizT
I'm glad it's all sorted.Reminds me of when one of my horses got very sick, the bill came to $1500 that was 18 years ago and obviously I was a lot younger . The vet was happy for me to pay it off weekly and I will always be greatful for that, but I figured he shouldn't have to carry me and applied for a credit card to pay the debt. To this day I still have a good relationship with this vet and know if push came to shove he'd give us an account. When I was 16 (1977) my dog got hit by a car. The Vet recommmended he be PTS as the surgery would be very costly but it was my fault he was off lead so I asked the Vet if he could help the dog please. He said the surgery was very doable but costly. When a co-worker told my boss what had happen he gave me a one month advance in my pay so I could cover the bill. He was a top bloke! HugUrPup
13 years ago a dog my mine ran out into the road and pushed a Maltese out of the way of a passing car.. saved it's life but she got hit herself. We took her to the vet and he did xrays etc and said she had internal bleeding and a broken pelvis. These are fixable injuries, but because the Vet knew my husband and didn't like him, he refused to do surgery even though we could get him the money the next day. He said we had to leave our dog there to get blood for her but she would probably be dead by the time we get back. He would have had blood there.. it's a Vet surgery for goodness sake. DH had been drinking and couldn't drive and I couldn't bring myself to leaving Misty in case she died while I was gone. The cold hearted bastard of a vet watched me hold her in my arms sobbing while she coughed up blood and whimpered in pain. I couldn't stand to watch her in so much agony any longer and he refused to treat her, so I agreed to let them PTS It was the worst day of my life. When the prick sent me a bill the next week for the xrays and injection, I told him to take me to court if he wanted his money. He never sent another bill after that. Suffice to say 80% of the people in the town refused to go to him after what he did. Not sure if he's still in business.. I doubt it though. Staff'n'Toller
Just for the record, we don't store blood. Whole blood only lasts 1-2 mths and is expensive so we get it if we need it from the blood blank or a clinic licensed to take blood and store it because we can get it same day or next day. There's not enough dog blood around for every clinic everywhere to have it all the time. I've had the blood bank say "no we don't have any" and have had to do a mad dash somewhere else for one of my own dogs. HugUrPup
Thanks for that info Staff'n'toller. He wasn't making mad dashes anywhere and he refused to give pain meds and stop the bleeding until we could get the blood. He could have saved Misty.. she took her own life to save another and the whole town knew about it within hours. He should have made more of an effort rather than holding a grudge towards my husband for something stupid he did as a kid. I agree it's quite poor form, but the industry is much better regulated these days. Pain relief is the first thing we do even if the animal has been brought in by someone off the street. I understand it's very traumatic to have your dog hit by a car but it sounds as though the odds were clearly stacked against her. If a dog fractures a leg being hit by a car well that sort of thing is easily fixable but internal bleeding takes dogs very quickly there's a very good chance you will open the dog up finding the injuries too severe or they have lost too much blood and pass away anyway. Of course it doesn't excuse any behaviour but perhaps it will help to make the situation clearer in your mind that you most likely did the right thing at the time. If they are that anaemic and you can't get blood into them right-there-right-now then it's a very difficult situation.
