SarahJ88
I'm looking to get my dog desexed next month as she will be 5 months and I want it done as soon as possible. I was going to sign up for the national desexing network discount however they have taken my vet off there list so I can't use it anymore. Just wondering what the costs everyone has come across (if they have desexed there dog, I realise this forum is full of show breeders who do not desex) for the size, breed, weight of there dog? Or if you can help on maybe giving me an estimate on how much it would be for my dog? (I realise calling would be the decision however just want to find out info at this moment) She is a 16 week golden retriever at the moment (will be 20-22 weeks when desexed) and at the moment weighs 12kgs but expect her to probably be around the 14-16kg mark at time of desexing. Thanks in advance
MolassesLass
It costs me just under $250 for a spay of a dog under 20kg (maybe between 10 - 20kg). The cheapest option is probably the AWL clinic at either Ipswich or Coombabah if you are really stretched for cash. They do their work as cheaply as possible and any small profit made goes back into the shelter.
Staranais
I'm not in Brisbane so don't know prices, but personally I'd just call around some local clinics and ask for prices. Most vet receptionists won't bite. Remember, too, that all desexing operations aren't equal - a "higher" price might be higher because it includes an IV catheter placed (for venous access in an emergency), IV fluids, pre-anaesthetic blood testing, better anaesthetic monitoring, and/or post anaesthetic pain relief. The most expensive clinic isn't necessarily the best either, of course. For a relatively major surgery like a spay, I'd personally also want to book the appointment with a vet I really trusted and that had a good reputation. dancinbcs
My repro specialist vet in Sydney is under $200 for a bitch that size. My last one done 2 years ago was $175, but I would say $200-$300 would be the more common price elsewhere. Vet prices are also dependant on real estate prices where they are located. A vet paying a higher rent or mortgage on their premises will always have to charge higher prices to stay afloat, so consider location. Our vets are wonderful vets used by many breeders from all over Sydney but they are not in a really expensive suburb.
Scarlett Dog
I got Scarlett desexed a fortnight ago. It was Just under $400. It seems a lot but with the breakdown the surgery itself was about $250. The rest was fluid therapy, blood work etc, pre-anaesthetic testing, pain relief for 5 days, cone/collar and follow up appointment after 7 days. minxy
All I can say is don't use Greencross Vets. Terribly expensive. I went to Sunnybank Vet Hospital for Kyojin (2 weeks ago) We were quoted $161/162 for him. They don't charge male dogs by weight, it's just a flat fee. Greencross wanted $380 for him. As he had only one descended testicle, the vet had to go digging for the other one, and so we had to pay the price of a bitch spay. All up SVH cost us $225 which was the price of a spay for a 35kg dog.
Staranais
Remember too that most vets deliberately subsidise spay operations, both to stay competitive, and to encourage people to spay. Spays tend to be rather cheap compared to other abdominal operations of similar complexity. Having said that, I do know one practice owner who refuses to subsidise bitch spays as he hates doing them, and he figures that if he makes them expensive people will go elsewhere. True story. Perhaps the Greencross vet is similar!
Scarlett Dog
Just make sure you ask for a quote of all the costs- not just of the surgery. Some places quote differently.

SarahJ88
Thank you all for your replies. I'm extremely tempted to sign up to the national desexing network however not sure on the only vet that is listed in my area, very dissapointed as well because the vet I use was previously on there but now isn't. She doesnt need to be desexed/spayed until mid april however it's hard to come buy money that quickly in that short amount of time (for me anyway). Thanks again
Boronia
Hi SarahJ88, I see you are at Alexandra Hills...well that's not too far from the vets at Koala Park Vet Surgery-it's just 1k or so south of Koala Park Victoria Point shopping centre/Pattens Big Gun area, it's on the Eastern side of the road just past a retirement home on the Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd. Give them a ring and ask them as they price on the size of the dog...32076041 They are pretty good as vets go, Daisy (Westie) was desexed for $199.60, so you can find cheaper but they are pretty good people and don't give you BS. The ladies at Capalaba Pet Foods recommend them - they go there also :-D Edited February 23, 2011 by Boronia
