CaseyKay
Gael's breeder sent me for the first birthday last year an email with 12 months photos of all her littermates in it. That was really nice, I printed them out and added it to her puppy folder as it also had all the pups at 6 weeks in the front of the folder. I email Gael's breeder for a chat once a month and send photos. All the other pups and the breeder live a long way from me and we've never met any of them, so I get to gush on how she sold me the most perfect, best loved puppy ever (well she is 18 months now) and update the breeder on how Gael is going at competitions. I never got anything like that for Cole but then I do see and hear about some of his litter mates from their owners. I would be stoked to get a birtday card or present for my dogs from their breeders.
Greytmate
You could send a card and maybe a small present, but you do have to be mindful of people not wanting contact or seeing it as advertising. The present should not be too personal, something like a tiny bag of healthy gourmet treats will be fine. Your card should mention the specific personality of that dog if possible, that you remember the pup and have been thinking of it and its family. It is important not to give the impression that the card could have been written for a hundred puppies using a computer. Because that is purely a sales tactic, and doesn't show any care for the individual. Offer what is reasonable for you to offer, now that the pup is growing up. Don't offer 'free boarding', instead invite the pup to stay at your home for holidays if necessary, because you would love to have him over. You can offer the opportunity for them to call you if they ever need help or advice with the pup, and handwrite your home phone number and email address on the card. You may get a call back one day. But accept that these people are not friends, and your relationship is with the puppy. People don't have to want to stay in contact to appreciate they have bought from breeder that cares. feistylady
Hi everyone, I would just like to get some dog/puppy owners views & opinions so that I can make a descision.I bred my first litter of 8 puppies last year, & it will be their first Birthday in a couple of months time. I kept one of the boys from the litter & found fantastic homes for the other 7. I am in regular contact with 4 of my puppy people via facebook , email & have even had a home visit from one of my owners & puppy. Unfortunately the other 3 puppy people have not kept in contact with me other than the first week of taking their puppy home, its a little dissapointing but I don't want to be pushy either, so I only hope that they love their pup & that the puppy is having a great life. I would like to start putting together a birthday present parcel to send to each of my puppies. I know the 4 owners that keep in contact with me will be delighted to receive the parcel, but I'm not too sure if I should send one to the other 3 pups, as I don't want to look pushy, especially because the owner hasn't kept in contact with me. I know the 3 pups don't care about being left out, as they are dogs & don't care about birthdays. But I personally would care & feel bad about leaving 3 of my pups out as I still love each & every one of them. So I'm not to sure what to do, Would you feel uncomfortable receiving a Birthday present parcel from your dogs breeder if you haven't kept in contact with them? Thanks everyone Nicole What an absolutely gorgeous and caring idea I would be over the moon with that even a lovely card

Thanks Greytmate I was pretty much going to do everything you have said anyway. I think for the 3 owners that have not kept in contact with me, I will send their pup a card & some treats, & the other 4 I will send them a little more, like some toys aswell as a card & some treats. Aslong as I acknowledge all of them, I'll be happy with that.
OSoSwift
SOunds like a good plan. I am still shocked that sending an email to someone when their pup was 12 months old can be classed as stalking and an owner going right off. Some strange people in the world!

Some strange people in the world! Yep there is definately some loonies, We are dealing with a living creature here, not a tv or fridge. Maybe these people should walk a day in a breeders shoes to experience the time, love, tears & hardwork a breeder puts into raising a litter before they start yelling stalker. A breeder asks nothing in return, this hobby is pretty much a labour of love so is it so bad to want a little update every 12 months? Its funny if a breeder ignores an owner when they have problems with a pup it is considered unethical, but if they show an interest in the pups well being they are a stalker, it sure can get a little confusing. If you don't want to have any contact with your pups breeder, that's fine just delete the email, no need to accuse them of stalking.

OSoSwift
OH just told me I can't understand people not wanting contact cause I am a weird dog person!!! He told me the average Joe Public buys a puppy and that's it that is all the relationship they expect. Most wouldn't think to contact the breeder if it goes pear shape becasue to them they own the dog adn the breeder is long forgotten. To a degree I think he has a point but there are obviously people out there like me! He then went on to tell me that a "breeder - using the term very loosely" sold a person he works with a pup. They bought a male, turns out it is a bitch!!!! Hope it wasn't called Roger or something! I asked if he returned it to get the sex he wanted. Apparently they didn't because they liked it regardless of sex. Worries me someone like that can call himself a breeder of any sort!!!
