curly
A quick question. Do american cocker spaniels come in brindle colours? Do they carry a brindle gene? If not, how can a 'spoodle' be brindle? (ok, I do know the answer to that question).
Kavik
I've seen a brindle Cavalier X Poodle - also stumped for that one
poodlefan
Poodles can be brindle although it is a disqualifying colour. Brindle is not an acceptable colour in Yankee Cockers but I dont know if it occurs in them. Sandra777
Brindle is a dominant pattern, so if a Poodle can carry brindle the American wouldn't have to. But how common is the brindle gene in Poodles? Same as the black and tan Rottweiler x Labradors I saw a while ago. The tan pattern gene does happen in Labs but it's extremely rare apparently. I'd put money on there being another breed responsible

Dogsfevr
Yes Americans can come in Roan colours & you wouldn't find on in Australia. In Australia we do have some of the Sable colouring although again not many
curly
Thanks for your replies. I do think there's some fibbing going on on the part of the breeder of this pup. American cocker mum and black poodle dad. Gorgeous puppy, even if a bit excitable and bitey, (every spoodle I've ever groomeed has been severely lacking in bite inhibition. Odd, that.) The owner was happy though, which is what matters.

Given that buyers of DDs don't tend to be experienced dog owners and get bugger all advice from their dogs breeders, my guess is that failure to address the issue in their pups is the root cause of that issue. Early separation of pups from littermates doesn't help either. Edited February 16, 2011 by poodlefan

Crisovar
The only one that I am aware of the breeding of has a silver sire, not a bad looking dog but definitely brindle.

frufru
I attempted (after much begging on the owners part) to clip a spoodle several years ago that was so aggressive it really needed to be pts - it was seriously psycho - never seen anything like it and no it had not been mistreated or had a bad experience at a previous groomer etc - owners were at their wits end. Danois
No such thing as a 'spoodle' - you must mean a 'spaniel x poodle'....
OSoSwift
I have seen a dog that is aparently a Pug X Beagle but it is brindle and has short legs and a longer body????
