Mrs Rusty Bucket
http://www.pantonepoodles.com/doodles.htm was trying to write a reply ie about alternatives to the cross breeds. if sister really wants a hybrid vigor dog, with a special rare unique breed quality, she could go to one of the rescues or shelters or pounds and adopt. I went looking for the UK equivalent of petrescue and got attacked by some virus thing in the alldogsrescue or all dogs something else so beware... above website has a really nice short list of alternatives to the cross breeds that are popular now. Eg Hungarian Puli, Hungarian Pumi or Lowchen. The only spaniel x poodle I've met was a nut case of a dog and not popular with anybody. Plays too rough with the smaller dogs and screams in fear at the dogs the same size or bigger. Typical of being taken away from its puppy mill siblings too young. LizT
I have been emailing my sister this morning with information about the many genetic issues each breed has and the foolhardiness of combining breeds on unhealth test parents (as you say Jed). Along with much of what has been said on this thread. I have also told her that I am surprised she would support a BYB as this is precisely what she will do if she pays Euros/Pounds for any BYB DD pup. I believe this may hit a nerve with her as she is a intelligent woman, but sadly uninformed (as most Ms. Publics are). Only today the Principle of my daughters school asked me if my Cavalier pup was a Poodle /Cavalier Cross???? When I answered "No, she is a Purebred", she replies "Oh, but she doesn't have the long ears of a Cavalier?" The pup is five months old??? I explained the l o n g ears are mostly hair and grow as the pup gets older! She told me she had a Maltese/Poodle cross that she searched around many Pet Shops until she found exactly the pup she wanted??!! As my five months old Cavalier sat quietly at my feet a myriad of children hurried past, she exclaimed..."My she is very well behaved isn't she..so well adjusted...my dog would be jumping around crazily at this stage...Why was I not surprised? I have told my sister I don't have a problem with a cross breed dog persae...just with BYB who do not health test. This applies to purebred dogs too, who of course have their own set of problems but at least those breeders that screen their breeding stock are trying to help the breed overcome these problems or at the very least are trying lessen the severity and occurances. The red's colour will probably fade but at least she's got some certainty around size, coat colour and temperament. Tell her to socialise the pants off it and get it into training ASAP. Thanks Poodlefan...her local vet runs Puppy preschool on a Tuesday night so she's all set for that! Being a London dog it will get to go everywhere with them too. It will also spent alot of time with her OH in his music studio as well. It'll be one cool pup.
betsy
Well Done! I was sitting having lunch with work colleagues, a couple of them fairly new. Another colleague and I were talking about our dogs (Me -Aussie Shep, Him- Irish Setter, from breeders). The new work colleague is keen to get a dog (just bought house, finally settled in one place). He is still deciding on breed. Not sure exactly where to get one from. He was horrified when we informed him of puppy farms and where most pet shop puppies come from. I was a bit astonished he was unaware of this. I hope that when he decides to get his dog that he will go with a breeder!

Yep, I was surprised last year when a lady at my daughters school asked me about Cavaliers and I told her not to get one from a pet shop as she had mentioned seeing some there. She was very shocked and surprised when I told her the reasons why not. End Result..when they settle in their new home they will look up some registered breeders. Some people truly don't know the issues involved.

Mrs Rusty Bucket
Obedience competition was invented by a poodle owner. YAY for the success in avoiding the gr x Here's hoping she gives it lots to do - every day. And that her place is escape proof, my uncle owned a black toy houdini poodle. So Sis - now for the doggy enrichment toys for home. My fave is a squirrel dude.

Plenty of squirrels in Hyde Park...but we don't want her chasing those!!! I'm sure my sister will make a wonderful Dog Owner. She has spent many years caring for a Flatmates Bassett that really wasn't getting any of the attention it should have until she came along. She has been a doggy "auntie" for so long now......it will be nice for her to finally be the true owner of one.
westiemum
Great news - well done for persevering - occasionally you get a victory! I was going to suggest the Battersea Dogs Home in London if the poodle falls through for some reason - don't know much about Battersea but it would be worth investigating I think... Congrats again to you and your sister!

Now she seems to be a bit concerned about the Puppies colour fading. She should stop being so superficial!!

poodlemum
There are free dogs, my most recent addition was free, although I like to think of her as priceless. But free pedigree dogs aren't given to just anyone, you have to prove your worth. I did by the fact that the breeder and I have acquaintances in the breed in common, I already owned 3 dogs of the same breed and I am actively involved with clubs etc. I didn't know she was free when I enquires about her though, I fully expected to pay $500-1000 for her. Don't ask me how much my "free" dog, Harrison has cost me ;) (not that I begrudge a cent of it) LizT - for your sister betting a purebred Poodle! Mrs Rusty Bucket
Hi LizT I don't think any dog would confuse rubber squirrel dude with the furry things however... the skinneeez complete with squeakies... might be a different matter. squirrel dude http://www.premier.com/View.aspx?page=dogs...ude/description hyde park squirrel http://www.flickr.com/photos/mlhs/1905756/ skinneeez http://www.dogsandthecity.com.au/Skinneeez...gless-Dog-Toys/ Somehow my dog will happily rip up a soft dog toy but completely refuse to dispatch a mouse for me. She just picks it up like a mum with her puppy and licks it. Dogs know the difference between their shoe and yours.
