Elkie1
Just after some information. We imported a bitch who is Prcd-PRA DNA tested clear by parantage and is the only elkhound in Australia to have been tested for this. I have been told that there is nothing to compare a sample for this teast for the elkhounds and waswondering if my import could be used tohelp with the test to become possilbe in the country and how would we go by it to make this happen. I would like to have any do tested for this that willbe used to breed with her and so I'm asking if anyone would know where I can atleast start with looking at testing my elkhound's for Prcd-PRA Thank you in advance
Erny
Elkie1 .... I haven't got a clue about this but my first thought was to contact Julie at MDBA. She knows a lot of stuff about health and testing and even if she hasn't got the full answer for you may be able to set you in the right direction. espinay2
If you contact the companies that do the testing (eg ASAP etc) I understand they are often happy to take samples from tested clear dogs to help them develop their testing.
Lowenhart
If you new import has been cleared by parentage for Prcd-PRA, it means that her parents were tested for it. I would approach the genetic testing companies (ASAP, GTG etc) and ask that they open up the options to do this test on Elkhounds. If they are doing the test in your girl's home country, they can do it here. They shouldn't need your girl for "comparison". You'd only need to lodge her DNA with one of the companies if you wish to use the "Clear by Parentage" they offer after clearing males that are bred to her. What I'm saying here is they don't have to do any research, just use the same Prcd-PRA test on the blood samples from your dogs as they would the breeds they have already listed for that test. Edited to add: Optigen does the test for Prcd-PRA on Elkhound, so whomever is their agent here can do the test here on your Australian dogs Edited February 12, 2011 by Lowenhart
