How Dog Friendly Is Adelaide

Hi I am currently living in New Zealand but relocating to Adelaide next year. Generally I would say NZ is not particularly dog friendly. We have lots of restrictions on where we can go with our dog including complete bans in some CBD areas. Would any Adelaide members have any good info for me on where you can and can't go with dogs. My little French bulldog is not into running around in dog parks but loves being out and about with me.

Australia is not dog friendly compared to many countries but Adelaide does not have any bans on walking your dogs in public places. There are no dog free streets here. They must be on lead though.

Most beaches allow dogs. Some may have a no off lead rule, some may have off lead at certain times only & some have no rules at all.

There are quite a lot of fenced off dog parks. All the cafes I have been to have been fine to serve me sitting outside at a table with my dogs although this may be at the discretion of the owner ?

City centre may have different rules, not sure as I don't go there with dogs.

I've taken Halo places in the city centre - she has only been carried though. But no one seemed to have a problem with her being there, but it's not really the done thing in the city. Around the suburbs though is completely fine as long as they're on lead, and during my research I've found that the Northern suburbs have the most dedicated off-leash areas.

Loads of people take their dog to the Old Racecourse (whatever it was called) where they hold the Clipsal. I haven't taken Dory into the CBD, but I have taken her to Cafes on Hutt Street loads of times.

More and more of the Inner Suburbs are getting it together for Dog parks. Burnside Council has a temporary one, to see if it is viable before committing to it. Judging by the useage they should just say yes...but, hey, it's Council. :D

Thanks for you replies. That all sounds very encouraging. Shyla is never off leash anyway so not a problem having on leash rules. we are looking at North Adelaide, Norwood, or Unley to live so it seems she will be able to do the cafe lifestyle with me :D

I live really close to Norwood too. Always walk the dogs down to the Parade and meet friends for breakfast on the weekends  They love it and have never had a problem with it. The cafes all have water bowls out too

I'm fairly sure there are no restrictions on dogs in the CBD other than they must be leashed. I take my puppies to Rundle Mall for socialisation. They see all sorts of people and things. Never had any troubles with this either.

Unley has lots of places dogs can be - on lead when sport is on the ovals and off lead when not - so long as you can stop the dog leaving the oval and going onto the road. A kind of natural selection way of enforcing "effective control". Ie the ovals do not have dog proof fencing. And I like it that way.

Linear park is great for walking dogs, but you do have to watch out for bicycles - dogs on or off lead and bikes do not always mix well. And the beaches are bliss.

But unlike Europe, you can't take your dog on public transport. Unless you're blind and it's a guide dog or similar.

I expect the more rural councils would be more ok about multiple dog house holds.

Most of the city plains councils have a limit of two, but are fairly easy to get a permit for three, if they're all small, the neighbours have no objections (eg they don't keep them awake all night), and there is a big secure back yard.

What are the most dog friendly councils in Adelaide, in terms of permits for numbers (and ease of obtaining permits for extra dogs) and restrictions on numbers?

i am not sure about that as each council is different. i think the Gawler/Lewiston area might be a bit different because there are lots of breeders there.

i think most suburban councils have a three dog limit (2 easily with the third needing an application)

i think you would need to check each council area.

not exactly a 'suburb' but Mid Murray Council (i'm at Mannum) has 1 dog per attached dwelling, 2 dogs per detached dwelling, and out of town up to 5 dogs. I have a kennel license out of town on 30 acres & it was not that difficult to obtain.

pretty sure much of the Metro area has the 1 dog attached, 2 dogs detached dwelling rule/zoning

as someone has said - all the councils have a two dog limit per suburban household - being able to apply for a third - not all will give it to you...

Onkaparinga (south) has an ok reputation for giving permission for a third dog - but they are not giving out any more kennel licenses in the area apparently.

Mitcham council (foothills and hills - south east city) is quite dog friendly and allow more dogs on application (they seem quite good on enquiry). Otherwise - you need to be in more rural council areas (like Gawler, Lower light etc (north))

I've never really though how dog friendly Adelaide is! I don't know what to compare it to!

There's plenty of parks and beaches where dogs are allowed and I often see people at cafe's with their dogs. I guess it is quite dog-friendly then! I've never had a problem with someone telling me where my dog can and can't be.

I wish you could apply for a permit or something to take dogs on public transport though.. that would be great for me!

I'm jealous! The suburbs you listed are all great places to live.

I think your new routine should include cafes on Sat morning, followed by a frolic at the beach on Sunday morning. There are plenty of places to take your dogs here.

Not as many as in Switzerland though. I just got back from there and people had dogs sitting under their tables inside restaurants. Loved that!
