gidg
I've been using these: http://www.love-em.com.au/puppy_rewards.html but thought I might have a go at making some healthy yet still quite small and hard baked treats, using her everyday dry food as a base. I like to have my pockets full of treats to catch and encourage good behaviour. Anyone had experience with making their own? Want to share? This is for a 14 week old Golden Retriever puppy. Thanks everyone.
laneka
Try this one, though your pup might go a bit overboard once the taste is acquired, lol. LIVER BREAD Ingredients Puree in blender: 500 g raw liver (any kind including chicken) 3 eggs 3tbs golden syrup garlic Dry ingredients 2.5 cups wholemeal SR flour or white SR flour. Mix dry ingredients together then add the blended mixture. Mix together, add water if required. Spread onto baking sheets and bake at 180c for about 10 – 15 minutes. Bake a bit longer for a firmer result. I forgot to add, I chop this up into small squares, pop into freezer bags and freeze, just take out what I need. This holds it's shape and is not gooey or fatty in your pocket. It is more like a cake cross bread. Edited February 10, 2011 by laneka
raineth
treats i normally use: liver: baked slowly at a low temperature. It has a soft texture and cuts up well and they just love it! beef mince: pinch little tiny pieces off and bake them (almost like miniscule rissoles). I just use a low-ish heat and bake until they're quite firm. suasge: just normal sausages fried and then cut up tiny. but if you want them to last a bit longer you can then bake them in the oven until they are dried out. fish fingers: baked and chopped up. lastly although its not home made, I find my "4legs" role at the supermarket makes really good treats (yummy, soft and keeps its shape when cut up). luvsdogs
I have'nt done it but one of these days I would like to get a dehydrater & make my own dried meat treats, much more healthy than the pre-packaged ones. You could also do fruit & vegitables too.
Kobi'sDaisy
Question re: baking mince, how long will these last for treats? how do you store them? thanks in advance!
tanteNdut
I'm thinking of baking this for my dog, but not too sure about the amount of milk used in the recipe. And not too sure about the appeal it's going to have compared to meaty treats. Any suggestions? Peanut butter cookies
SmoothieGirl
Its easy, is quick and pups and dogs go nuts for them: Home roasted chicken breast or tenderloins. Bake with a little olive oil or safflower oil and then either chop up or tear bits off as you train. Bronte loves it and it sends Ren bananas. Sayreovi
I use Happy Paws treats for everyday use, best treats, all my dogs go nuts for them even my picky boy. I don't usually like buying things like this over the net, but they were at this Dogs Day Out and I had my puppy Jovi with me and she adored them so much that I bought half a kilo of them Website it: http://www.happypawstreats.com.au I do vary treats a fair bit though and depending on what they are doing, for example when competing in Flyball I used cooked dim sims ripped up. It was the only time they got them, and I figure the amount of energy they burn through doing that in a day counter balances everything and it's a massive reward for them
raineth
Question re: baking mince, how long will these last for treats? how do you store them?thanks in advance! I keep about five days worth in the fridge with no problems (probably because its quite dried out) and the rest I'll store in the freezer
