Sick dogs are likely to have toileted or spewed in the surrounding area. The iside should be fairly safe as hopefully the clinic cleans the earea with disinfectant but theres still a small risk there. 1.4 kms is probably too long for a lead walk anyway. just my opinion Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We usually carry him from the car into the vets anyway (plus we dont let him go on the ground even in the vet clinic)... This last shot is really only a booster (as vet said) and pup has been allowed to go to parks etc.. He has walked further on a leash before, he is a very energetic puppy (JRT). (He loves going for walks) ITs not really the distance as more the shot itself, will he be ok to walk home afterwards? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's not good for growing bones & joints. Also my vet always says not to exercise straight after a vaccination in case they have a reaction to it. Can happen even if no reaction b4. We will have an unhappy puppy for a couple of weeks.. He loves running around the park/oval. Be guided by your breeder and vet, not someone elses vet. My vet and breeder recommended getting ours out and about from 8weeks. He even got tiny walks... sure hasn't done him any harm and he's not been sick. He even walked small distances when he went to the vet the day after he came home, as we had our kelpie too who was scared of cars and had to walk him to the vet. It's really personal choice and if you're willing to risk the dog getting sick.. However, he did not socialise with any 'unknown' dogs until he was fully vacced, or go to the dog park (in fact, he's only ever gone twice.. I hate it). It's not good for growing bones & joints. yes and no. I think we're a bit too precious these days with dogs. Take a look at most farm/working dogs they run all day from he moment they can get about. Exercise builds muscle and enourages the body to grow to handle the rigours of various movements the dog will do. RuralPug Posted February 8, 2011 Share Posted February 8, 2011 I wouldn't walk a medium or large puppy of that age that distance, but a JRT or other small terrier, if accustomed to regular exercise hasn't got the weight-bearing-on-fragile-growth-plates issue plus they are so small you can and will carry them if they tire. 1400 metres then a rest for a JRT pup isn't excessive in my book, unless it is very steep. kitkatswing Posted February 8, 2011 Author Share Posted February 8, 2011 We ended up driving him last night as I got home late.. But my husband is taking him back to the Vets at 9am this morning.... I dont know whats wrong with poor Maui but he is just not himself. Last night when we got home he curled up in my lap and slept all night, then this morning he didnt want to do anything except sleep in our laps...He is also shivering like he is cold... He is usually full of beans in the mornings! So I rang the Vet and he is taking him back in at 9am just to make sure he is ok... I hate being at work when pup isnt feeling well.. kitkatswing Posted February 8, 2011 Author Share Posted February 8, 2011 Ok so we didnt end up taking him, but did speak to Vet on the phone.. Maui has spent the last hour happily playing on the front lawn with my husband. It seems it was just a bit of lethargy from the vax.. He isnt 100% but is HEAPs better... Vet said to just keep an eye on him and brign him in any time if we need to. Maui is happily eating and drinking and chasing bugs.... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We dont have any dog parks in walking distance of me anyway, I wouldnt take him there until he is older and bigger. We have a couple of normal parks within walking distance that he runs and plays around in He is back to his old self again now, have almost perfected getting him to "lay down" from me standing now. My cat when she was having her baby vacs was ok after the 1st, lethargic for a few hours after her 2nd & quite ill after her 3rd. I was so worried I took her straight back to the vets & she addmitted her overnight because of a high temp. Now when she has her vacs she has to have an anti-hystamine vac before & all was ok last time & she's now overdue for her annual. Must take her next week & hope she has no reaction again.
