Herding - Adelaide

 Share

Recommended Posts

My girl participated in a 'come and try' herding day at SACA last year with sheep and absolutely loved it and did very very well, especially as it was her first exposure to sheep. If we could have stayed for the afternoon instinct test, I am told she would have got her basic herding instinct certificate easily.

I notice that there are tests coming up again in april. Is there anywhere in Adelaide where one can go an learn herding? My girl might instinctively know what to do, but I have no idea at all. Would love to see how far she could go too, especially as she seems to really enjoy it.

I've taken mine a couple of times to Cass at Meadows Kennels and Kattery boarding kennels. Cass does herding, judging, and training.

I don't know if she's still there but I haven't heard anything different.

You can also try the contact person on the herding page at DogsSa

PS you can also ask Piper on here (send her a PM).

Or wait until I see the thread. :(

If you are south of the city, Cass is where I would suggest you go. She is Ringbarka Kelpies and works at Meadows Boarding Kennels (which is where she does the training) so you can get in touch her with her through there or look up contact details for Ringbarka

The HAC will be running a clinic in April and also hopefully some training days at SACA over autumn/winter/spring. These days depend though if we can get anyone to transport stock for us which is a big ask. Beast bet is to try and contact Cass for lessons though so you can get regular training.

I have managed to get Jazz through to intermediate level with highly irregular training but I knew what I was doing from training Piper. No way I would have got where I am with Jazz and the training we have done had she been dog number 1. There is a lot for the handler to learn with herding - as well as teaching the dog the necessary skills you need to learn how the stock work, how to read them, how they react to you and your dog's presence etc.

Good luck. I didn't realise you had been to the come and try day. You would either have worked with Cass or myself on that day.

i think i worked with Cas. (Trying to remember names)

I had a sheltie (Rommy) and we had a go with sheep. Belle, the polish lowland sheepdog went in straight after us - and you couldn't miss her.

I might PM you - I have questions about how to enter. The schedule is out for the instinct test/trial in April and I am trying to find an entry form for that somewhere online. It doesn't seem to be the conformation form or even the trial form.

Rommy is about to drop all her coat and so I won't be showing her for a couple of months - thought herding might be a bit of fun in between.

jr_inoz unless its changed we just used a normal obedience/conformation entry form when we entered. I just wrote herding instinct test somewhere on the obedience/agility/jumping line on the entry form and completed the other details as normal. Ooops except you don't need to put the sire and dam information that you would otherwise put on a conformation entry form.

That was me then - I got the fun of having Belle  I had a few shelties comes through and don't remembner specific individuals (except Belle as she is so unique :D )

For entries you just use the standard entry form and in the obedience or special class area write herding instinct.
