Rash Under Pups Arms

So for the second time Phoenix has broken out in a very red, swollen rash type thing in her arm pit. It happened about 5 weeks ago and cleared up with some cream. She is currently on antihistimines and antibiotics for an alergic reaction she had on her stomach which came out as little red spots almost like chicken pox, but this has still come up. Here are some pics

Any ideas on what could cause this? A plant? An insect bite?

Wandering Jew? Reactions to this commonly present in a chicken pox type reaction. The tummy, arm pits and muzzle and also affected the most as these are the parts that come into contact with the plant.

If no wandering jew, I'd be looking at other plants and/or grasses.

Yeah that looks VERY similar to what my girl came up with the other night. We've pinned it down to Wandering Jew. The vet has given us some antihistamines to help with the itch and inflammation but we'll have to get rid of the plant completely if we want it to clear up permanently. Just spent the morning with round up in the yard.

Phi is already on antihistimines and anyibiotics which is why i thought it was weird it has come up again

Does she like crawling a lot?

Are there weeds in the lawn? Cape weed and some dandilion types can do that. And fresh cut buffalo gives me a rash. Kikuyu is better but I still get the itches if I roll on it with bare skin. My dog loves to commando crawl and sometimes she gets red from abrasion.

And the mozzies have been getting stuck in lately. Sigh. Love the rain but could do without the bugs.

Keep in mind that the reaction dogs have from Wandering Jew isn't so much an allergic reaction, but more a chemical reaction. There's something in the make up of the plant that irritates dogs skin, rather than a histamine response happening, so I wouldn't expect anti histamines to work very well in this instance.

Our dog has severe protein based food allergies and breaks out in a similar rash in the armpits, groin and along the belly within 72 hours of consumption. He has a limited list of safe foods and we are constantly on the hunt for new ingredients we can add to his diet. When we find something he hasn't had before, we try him on it and wait 72 hours to see if he reacts. If he does, we put him on macrolone for 2-3 days to control the itching and wash the skin with betadine to prevent secondary infections.

Although the reaction time/ severity of the symptoms for a food allergy response may vary between dogs, it may be something else to consider. If the rash persists, the vet can arrange for a allergy test to determine exactly what's causing it.
