happy_la
Ok just wanting to know if anyone has done the import themselves minus the cost of a 3rd party... frozen semen. import permit (easy) being your own agent (meeting the shipment being your own agent with AQIS) anyone have any experience? yes most will think that its hard but I personally don't think so I have time to study papers etc just want to know if anyone has done it and if I can make some savings it would be an option I would pursue but after paying the stud fee + collection fee's on the other end once adding it all up I can import a dog for the same price virtually so there is so saving on doing frozen unless you can do it yourself... anyone have any idea of collection costs in the US as well from last 12 months?? Thanks in advance I look forward to your replies. Edited February 3, 2011 by happy_la
poocow
I personally would use a company to bring it in as its a lot of hassle. The semen arrives at the airport and is moved under bond movement from there to the AQIS office. The semen will sit there until the paperwork has been looked at, if theres issues with the paperwork this can take however long ie. until its rectified. You will have to have access to dry ice as you will need to top up the tank whilst it is at AQIS. You will also have to handle the dry ice and the straws during the AQIS inspection. espinay2
I have used a shipper - I don't think I would want to try and do it myself. It was worth the approx $900 (not including collection costs) to have them do it - just for peace of mind. While it is nice to save money, it is not something I was willing to risk. They do it all the time and know the pitfalls/have a good working relationship with AQIS - I don't. If you are doing it yourself, will you have your own canister? With a shipper often the canister is shared which means costs are reduced. They will often quote the cost for just you using it to begin with, but will often arrange a 'bulk shipment' which means costs for that part at least are shared. Possible costs to factor in: import permit hire or purchase of canister (you may need it for a couple of weeks) insurance recharge of canister (likely necessary) freight charges (to airport from storage/flight/from airport to storage) AQIS clearance requirements handling and unpack into storage at destination Edited February 5, 2011 by espinay2
