I watched the show, it was what I expected. After reading all your responses, I don't think that even if he did anything right you'd admit to it, your a tough audience. But guess what, channel ten could not care whether you were liking it or not just so long as you watched it so the joke was on you. basically I thought the show was pointing out few of the things to expect if you a dog, like having it rip your apartment to pieces, it was a one hour show with 3 stories of course it was just going to skim over it. Hands up who likes Bondi rescue, well if you have any idea about the ocean and surf rescue you would know that it is just the same as Bondi vet, it skims over some things and sensationalizes others, it's light entertainment. One person said they turned it over as soon as 7 pm Project finish, what's that "news latte" news for yuppies who find factual informative news boring who need a simple show to keep them informed of a few things(but not to many) that are happening in this world. Take note that Bondi vet piggy backs this show as it is targeting the same audience. It's called light entertainment folks, you realize when on the promo they poke the button and say "seriously" there just poking fun at you for being stupid enough to watch there channe :o l

It was just something to watch while I ate dinner actually, but you made me giggle....I like angry little people....they make these threads even funnier ;) ;)

Obviously you watch it too, or you wouldn't know so much about the channel!! Bwahahahahah....come sit with me & watch more channel 10...you know you want to !!!! :p

I'm not angry, just amused at the way some of the the people(not the majority) take great delight in feeding off each other as the comments and ridicule gets nastier, not surprising to to see this pack mentality though, It is dogsonline ;)  :o:) :) :

You're joining in with the pack mentality by by ridiculing me for watching the 7pm project, if we're going by that logic :) ....I'm thinking of a phrase containing "pot" & "kettle"....can you guess what it is yet??? :p

So what are you doing here Mervin, you obviously don't take dog ownership very seriously, or is school not back yet :)

Perhaps a trip to the pound and watching the dogs being given the green dream will make you wake up to how bad misinformation can be,( holds my tongue, as not worth the warning).

My dogs a rescue dog, I have never had any other, I was just pointing out that if you watch a commercial channel what can you expect, it is tailored to the city centred brain dead culture.

Ok so you have a rescue dog, thats great. I am trying to figure out whether it is a kelpie x or a bull terrier/whippet x??????

As you will find with your time on DOL many people will have different opinions. Many, many opinions are backed up with actual real life stories.

Funny that

Was wondering this myself. Hmm....me thinks someone is telling fibs.

I'm also curious as to why someone would become a member of a forum they so obviously despise...bizarre.

I was wondering the same thing. What happened to the bull terrier x whippet?

Anyway I do wonder how many people will rush out this morning and buy a cute puppy from a pet shop window based on the misinformation in that show and not even think about what it is to be a dog owner?

I was shocked at how the poor GSD was left in the bathroom all night on its own away from its family. No idea why he has no clue on crate training???

Many remarks/posts on lack of crate training.

Crate training is not the way to go for some people & we did actually used to manage puppies & raise them to civilised & toilet trained adult hood without a crate.

The programme was poor in many respects but leaving the GSP in the bathroom was not so bad. Safer than loose in the house & some pups get crated in a very small area & their owners just sleep through & too bad for puppy.

The concept that pups will not soil their own bed is not always true.

The advice to leave puppy warm, safe & comfortable & ignore howling/crying was correct.

All too easy to give in & take it into your own bed, me guilty of it sometimes too but its wrong really.

Have no idea what you mean by that. Do you mean "Do I reckon she has bull terrier in her??

If you look back on your posts you will see that last year you owned a Bull terrier/whippet x

and then this year you own a Kelpie x.

I was just wondering what happened to the BT/W x

Yes true. But some simple advice on crate training -even a brief mention- could have been valuable in a show like this.

Bigdogg, Leerburg make some great DVDs. Unfortunately they are very expensive and the average puppy buyer would have no idea they even exist. It would be nice if we could get something like that available over here, there is certainly a market for it.

OH said to me last night " better get on to DOL and see what their saying all of them will be in shock " :)

I could of shaken the poop out of that Vet !

scaring the pups with loud noise that will do them good .... NOT !!

although the balloon hidden in garden was OK as long as some one there to remove it once it popped

no crates ,no puppy pens used , pups running amoke on slippery floors,

that blue pup was way way aggro to other dogs :o and no mention of keeping on a lead !

sigh yep was just what I expected .

This show does worry me as so much of what he said is incorrect and yes we "doggy" people can choose to turn it off, but just how many dog ignorant people would watch this and treat it like a "bible". This show if done correctly, could be a wonderful tool in educating people and it would still be enjoyable to watch. People want to watch shows about animals, so why not make it an educational tool as well. It is such a wasted opportunity to educate people in my opinion.

Completely agreed. Another opportunity to educate gone right down the drain. :)

A lot of people don't like the idea of crate training puppies. I have heard people say it can only be done when they are puppies because if you tried to crate train an adult dog they wouldn't tolerate it and chew through it and howl the whole time etc, whereas a puppy has no choice and will eventually go quiet if you just leave it long enough. Which is not how I crate trained my puppy at all, but a lot of people do so I can't blame some people for not wanting to do that to their new puppies.

When I was growing up we never had crates, the new puppy would be in the kitchen which would be closed off and my dad would sleep on the floor with it the first few nights until it settled in. Crating is pretty new where I'm from, and I think it's great, but before it became popular people still managed to raise and housetrain puppies, and people who have grown up not crating are not going to jump on the crating bandwagon just because it's now the "cool" thing to do.

There are so many different ways to train dogs, it would take a lot for this show to show methods that everyone agree with. I am sure even some experienced dog people would agree with the methods shown, not just ignorant new puppy parents.

But Ian Dunbar does heaps of DVD's and has done shows for tv, why can't we write the network and ask them to put some of those on? I don't agree with absolutely everything he does, and some of it is oversimplifed (but I think all experienced trainers oversimplify some things ("you just do this, the puppy will respond like this, and voila!")) but at least when you use positive reinforcement and become more aware of how the dog can self reward etc, then you're not going to do much damage to it.

My daughter suggested I watch the programme to learn something about raising puppies as I am looking at buying one and as I have not had a puppy in 15 years I thought yes good idea :rainbowbridge:

Watching and remember I am just an average person seeking to buy and train I thought wow haven't times changed since I last had undertaken this job, locking a newly born puppy first night home in a bathroom let alone the posh bathrooms what a joke and using the old phrase in my day we tended the puppy through the night no different to a first night home human baby in my books and I always used a ticking clock supposed to be somewhat similar to its mothers heart beat? I would take outside to toilet train every couple of hours and of course the newspaper on the floor of my laundry at all other times.

Not allowed in the kitchen at meal times as a pup and as a mature dog only if there were no issues of begging for food.

I cannot believe allowing the puppy in the unit definately not suitable for a dog of the size it was going to grow to,

I was gobsmacked with the fight scene and more gobsmacked when they let that young kid grope and smother it people are too blase about young children and dogs they brag little johnny can do what ever he likes to the dog hit, grope pul lears and fur poke eyes but OH what a wonderful doggy who puts up with it all AH but one day little doggy might have enough and bite when he has had enough then he will be a naughty doggy put to sleep because of ignorant owners

But the one bit that actually cracked me up was the plant removal YES we all need to be aware of what is poisonous but no way would someone just start ripping your plants out and it was obvious that those plants were newly out of pots planted for the effect of the programme to this end I viewed this programme as no better than a soap opera

Agree with you both.

The program was not objective. It was under the influence of a pet food company. Did you notice the product placement (brand showing clearly) with the comment that puppies only needed dry food.

So that means the program's 'scripting' was not going to diss any particular kind of breeding, like deliberately mixing cav & poodle.

Nor diss any point of sale (note, we saw puppies for sale in a petshop).

As the 'designed' mix dogs form such a large part of the pet population now, this program wasn't going to deal with either objectively. They want customers (K'ching), not educated dog owners.

I rarely hurl abuse at a TV screen. But when I saw the cav parent & poodle parent in the pen at the designed mix property, I screeched like a banshee, 'Leave the purebreds alone!'

And when they came to rate the 'success' of the pets at the end, I was left with a strangled, 'No!', when Max the cavoodle got the highest score.

Honey, the German Shepherd (p/b I suspect) was the outstanding winner, by a mile, IMO.

Her owner complained & whinged more (bless her, been there!), but she and her daughters saw problems as issues to work on. And they did! Honey got the best socialisation...with the flocks of little girls, other pets.

And Honey attended a breed specific obedience class. Pity the viewers couldn't have seen a bit more of those magnificent adult GSD's, owned by ordinary people, going thro' their obedience paces. With Honey & the others in the 'baby class' getting some role models. And her mum & the girls learning heaps about the best a p/b GSD can be.

At the end, Honey's mum summed it up. Honey was transforming into the brilliant & affectionate family pet they'd wanted. And was showing her care for the youngest daughter, by 'shadowing' her.

How could they put Max the Cavoodle first? His owner loved him, no doubt. But he was indulged, rather than trained. Jumping all over her new boyfriend. My tibbie girls are trained....'Bottoms on the ground first, to get any pats from new people'

OK, some tiny snippets of usefulness. A fleeting glance at some rescued puppies. Really nice ones at that!

But so many basics were left out. Like for puppy's first night away from mother dog & pups! Where was the soft toy that had been rubbed all over the mum & other puppies to take their comforting scent into the new home??? And where were the specific steps of toilet training?

I wish this show would get a real behaviourist in to assist Chris - he can be the vet and do vet things. Surely they can find a good looking behaviourist to complement Chris!! This is where the danger lies in any type of "INFO MATION". People will take the 'condensed' version of anything over the long drawn out informative lessons in life. It's just sooo much easier. Yes, it may be light hearted viewing but you will hear people say....Don Burke said this......The Bondi Vet says that....Caeser Milan says....and so on.
