Wonder who thought up these rules? I bet they didn't bother to consult the repro specialist vets. Very odd that they are allowing different ages for breeds of similar size and allowing earlier matings for breeds much larger than some they have down for 24 months. An Akita is a much larger breed than a Visla and an Airdale is a much bigger breed than an American Cocker :rainbowbridge:

With these ages, I know that Qld has been party to allowing a bitch(Bullmastiff) to be bred from under the minimum age for that particular breed. The puppies were registered on Main instead of limited. This was after the ruling came in with ANKC. And the ANKC were not prepared to go against what the CCCQ did. The CCCQ were not prepared to change what they had done.

So while these may be the minimum ages for breeding it can also be all smoke and mirrors.

And personally I believe the minimum age for Bulldogs should be 18 months not 12 months

Some absolute minimum's are fine but a lot depends on how many seasons the bitch has had. I usually prefer 2-3 years for a first litter but had one girl on her 5th season at 22 months  ,so mated her then. They lose fertility with every season so if they come in early and cycle every four months, earlier is better than later, to avoid problems.

Also, while I don't agree with breeding very young bitches, the few in my breed I know of that have been accidently mated at 9-10 months, have all whelped and raised their litters with no problems whatsoever.

We don't have a state breed club or national breed club and to my knowledge no breeder in Victoria in my breed was consulted about selecting an age suitable for mating. What annoys me as well as no consultation is that there is no mention of the males and ages. Many have no issues using them at a year, but personally I don't agree with it.

I am also curious about which date will apply..May past, or May future? This will probably impact my breeding plans as the bitch I plan on mating will be probably about three weeks earlier than her eighteen month birthday. I personally wouldn't even blink normally as it's close enough for me, but where will this actually leave me in the eyes of VCA? She will be hip/elbow tested and have had three seasons...

Why would you need a minimum for dogs? They don't have to carry and raise a litter. If they need to be hip/elbow scored they have to be old enough for that but many of the breeding problems these days stem from using males too late for the first time. The old breeders used to use males around 9-10 months for a first mating and had much more reliable studs as a result.

Well Im sure the people who were in the clubs and voted on what they thought was best for their breeds are all happy

Its too bad that none of it makes any sense from a science perspective. Cant see any point actually any more in breeders needing to know jack about the science of the reproductive issues of the species. They can all be led like lemmings to do as they are told rather than need to know why or why not. Repo vets tell us the opposite but some where some how someone decided that a good breeder was one who interfered and tried to turn their dogs into humans and now its been voted on and like it or not whether its good for the dogs or not its a done deal.

Then we see Cavs can be mated at a younger age than beagles or Aussie terriers when world wide they are asking us to hold off on mating cavs.

Why can cavs be mated earlier than all of those others?

24 months for a Maremma ? Why? Im such a terrible breeder Ive been breeding them at 18 months for 16 years so where can I go to learn why what Ive been doing is wrong and why making my bitch wait for up to a year longer [ because of their cycles ] is better for her or her puppies?

Does anyone know what is the MAXIMUM age a bitch can bred from?

From an ANKC ruleing.

BB

God, don't get them started on that as well. The maximum age should be decided on an individual basis by the breeder and their vet. 8 or 9 is common in my breed for a last litter and some even produce well at 10. These ages would be positively geriatric in many breeds and even in some bloodlines in our breed. If a bitch is fit and healthy, not showing her age and has not already raised large numbers of puppies or had a lot of litters, there is no problem with breeding her, no matter what her age.

Personally, it doesn't really affect me as I've always waited till my bitches are around 2 before mating them. That's my personal choice, I want them to grow up first, However, the inconsistancies with all of this is just rediculous.

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to drag up an old topic, but does this mean mated after 16mo or whelping after 16mo? And is it just for Vic or all states?

Just working out timing but hopefully a non issue anyway - she would have to come in very early for me to have to worry!

And the back yard breeders can still breed what they like when they like and to whom they wish.

What a joke.

Not just backyard breeders !!!

I have just found out that a girl we sold into an experienced show home in NSW has had a litter - she is from our H Litter they were 12 mths old on 11/09/12 - she whelped her litter on 14/11/12.

Even if this was a "mistake" (and I don't believe that for one second - these people have been in dogs forever) you just wouldn't let it go to term in a 12 mth old dobermann bitch.

:mad
