What Have You Achieved During The Break?

It is almost two months now since we have had formal training & over three months since our last trial. Our club shuts down during during Dec /Jan & we don't start back till 7th with our first trial 12th March. We havn't been slack though, even if we did eat a bit too much over the holiday period  We have been working on distance handling, weave pole entries, contacts 2o/2o & obstacle discrimination.

Bindi is now 99.99% on her weave pole entries from both sides & I am now successfully sending her from half way down the weaves. Her exits are equally as good & I can send her to the weaves from a good distance & any angle :D Her contacts (2o/2o) are almost 100% on the dog walk & the see saw, though we havn't been able to train the A frame yet. I can now send her to either the dog walk or tunnel when they are side by side, on verbal command only & can layer them. I can put her through a 4 jump serpentine by me standing up one end & just moving my shoulders...you know...the way Susan Garret does it  When I first saw that video...I thought ...WOW, I'll never be able to do that. We can almost do it with sets of 4 x 2 jumps. We have also been working on lefts & rights & have had a big break through there, & can now stand directly behind her at a jump & ask her to take the next jump to the left or to the right just on verbal command...no body language.

It will be interesting to see if everything she has learnt still sticks when she gets back into trialing  I think my girl has done her homework well  & I am very proud of her.

I have been working on contacts, just using my short plank, getting a better understanding for exactly what I want him to do (pounce into 2o2o position with both front feet at the same time) and getting this consistent without the target and on verbal command. He is doing really well :D though is better on my left than on my right for some reason. Can't wait to try it out on real equipment

I haven't done as much weaving as I would like - trying to fix up a problem where he sometimes stalls in the middle of the weaves if I turn towards him or slow down - have done some but the grass keeps growing so fast OH can't keep up with it and it is now knee high - bit too long for weaving practice

Agility - Jedi is now weaving 6 poles with independent entries, his contacts are straighter and we've been doing some distance work. Ahsoka is almost weaving 4 poles, but I haven't really pushed the issue! It's a lower priority for her.

Obedience - I didn't even get around to scentwork with Jedi (AGAIN!), but we've been working on down stays and DOR. For Soaks, she is getting there with her heelwork and is developing a nice SFE and stays.

I really don't feel like we've accomplished much in all that time though! :D

My holiday goal was to get Millie weaving, and start on a really reliable recall with both girls.

Millie is now weaving 12 straight poles (not 100% reliable yet :D) but the RRR didn't happen, I'm so naughty  This is probably the most important one to teach and the one I keep putting off. Shame on me

Impressive, sheena!

Agility - almost nothing. :o Need to get into it.

Obedience - building up duration focussed heeling with Rory - going quite nicely (fingers crossed) and playing with a few other things. Most successful is retrieving. We have a nice formal db retrieve (not really quite sure how that happened  ), although he does gallop a bit like a rocking horse coming in cos he's so proud of himself :( . Even my db throwing has got a bit better (although it seized up in a really strong wind in a ring run out last night  ). We've also been playing with the metal article - just retrieving at this stage - and baby seekbacks. :) .

HTM - a bit of training with Kirra - including a couple of new new moves.

Tracking - nothing yet.

Our dog club has been running summer classes so I've been instructing puppy class - we don't like people with new puppies to miss out :D - but full training doesn't start till next weekend.

To do list - top of the list - stays :( - although SFE is coming along - he's good when it's just me now - but gets excited with other people.

Ziggy has had a nice break although with our first Jumping trial for the year this Sunday we have been tightening up rear crosses, wrapping around jumps, run home and the weavers.

Little Em has been playing hard and is progressing well for a young 'un....heeling, automatic sits, sit on the run (for retrieving), sit stay, drop, informal recall, formal front, nose target to hand, free shaping, dummy retrieve etc.

For the first time in 3 years (since I started 'training') I have only really worked on play and relationship. We've used some agility equipment along the way, but haven't really focussed on anything other than having fun and building drive.

Now back to work. LOL.

My goal for this year is to make EVERY training session for each dog fun. Something I've not been the best at in the past.

Well Cindy worked very hard at sneaking up on waves on the beach. She also tried to retrieve a rottiing sting-ray and when that did not work she and her partners in crime decided to roll in it

I have started work though and I thought CCD was a challenge

Darcy had a break until the New Year, I wasn't really doing much with Zee except some groundwork, foundation and of course heaps of fun stuff.

Since New Year Zee's now weaving 12 poles, is working on her footwork, and has just started some real sequencing in the last 2 weeks - all that groundwork has certainly paid off. In less than a month I've gone from having a very novice baby dog to one that is really starting to look like an agility dog. :)

Darcy has been working hard on her jumping & grid work. I also put Darcy through the 2 x 2 training with Zee and she's doing some lovely stuff with her weaving. Hopefully we can knock off the occasional 10th pole pop and nail some nice entries in the ring :(

Don't you just love it when your dogs do that, especially if you then have to have them in the car for a long trip home :)

I try to do pretty much nothing in the way of training over the break. I always feel the dogs need a break & so do I. Mine spent a week at the farm & 2 weeks on the beach :(

It always seems like a good idea until I realise I have a trial, like, TOMORROW! :)

I'm sure they'll both be feral, more fun for me

Yeah-4 dogs and 2 kids under 4-just great! "Grandma, what is that smell? Is it a nappy?"

Bronte had an action packed 2010, so after the Croydon trial we focused on FUN!!!! We spent the rest of December walking in the bush, playing at the park and just generally took the pressure off.

In the second weekend in Jan we attended a herding camp and most of this month has been herding focused. She is now starting to ease up on her speed, showing good distance work, some nice stops and last weekend some amazing yields. Mind you, we don't necessarily get these things all at the same time, "that's asking a bit much mum".

Just started some obed training in the last couple of weeks and its going ok, but I haven't ramped it up much yet.
