CrazyCresties
I always like your pictures Kirislin, maybe it's the softness that I like What focus point are you using, and are you using AF One Shot or AI Servo/Focus?

Doh!! I hate the softness! For this pic I used one shot, if he was running I'd use AI servo and possibly mulitple shooting.
persephone
Kirislin... I think that image we see here is not what came out of the camera ..cos it HAS to be resized down so it can be posted ? When images are resized, they do lose some quality- which is why folks resize then do some adjusting if needed, I think.... Oh- and out the two posted together- I prefer the first one- before editing

I dont know how to resize it, flickr must do it for me. I'm such a goose with this stuff it's a wonder I can manage to operate a washing machine or stove. persephone
Found THIS As you publish photos, they're compressed and resized by Flickr (if necessary) in the following sizes:75x75 pixels 100 pixels (on the longest side) 240 pixels 500 pixels Large (which will be 1024 pixels if it exceeds that length) The original size (if you have a pro account) To access all of these sizes for a photo, click the "All Sizes" link on the individual photo page. If you have a pro account, we also store your high-resolution originals, which you can download at anytime as long as you remain Pro. Anyone can access public photos and download the high-resolution (original) size from a Pro account, unless you limit access to the downloadable image. Permalink | Top Can I access my original images? We resize your photos to more web-friendly dimensions. Each image has a 75x75 pixel thumbnail and 100-, 240-, 500-, 640- and 1024-pixel versions (that's the length of the longest side), as well as your original file. When you view an individual photo page, click the "Action" button and then "View all sizes". If you have a free account, no one (including you) can access your original file. If you upgrade to a pro account, your original files are available for download. You can use the global setting in your account to specify who can download original files: Only you; your friends and/or family; your contacts; any Flickr user; or anyone. In case you have attached a Creative Commons license to your photo indicating you're OK with sharing it, this makes the original file available to anyone if you have a pro account. Kirislin
Oh OK, I have a pro account I just tried it and the original is HUGE. I'd get yelled at if I put that here, the dial up people would crucify me. Edited January 27, 2011 by Kirislin
B-Q
I've only just started getting into using my camera a bit more so I'm a total newb. But I've always admired your photos Kirislin, I think you take spectacular photographs.
tlc
Here is the orignal you posted above and one edited in LR, there is no sharpen in LR but clarity, I think it is the same thing. Im no expert for sure. The only other thing I did was made the black a little blacker. For the record, I always think your pics are awesome! raineth
How are you resizing & what size & Resolution? And are you sharpening before or after resizing? Both these things will make a difference as to how sharp something looks.I think that last pics was very sharp, just different light & a more distracting background to Wag's I know nothing about resizing, I sharpen using DPP, the canon program that comes with the camera. As to the composition of the pic I took I have to admit putting absolutely no thought into it at all , I just wanted to try to get an in focus pic to use as an example of how I cannot get them as sharp as others. Kirislin, in the photo magazine I bought. I just happened to read today that the program canon gives you with the camera is not as good quality as the programs give with some of the other cameras such as the Nikon. Just thought I'd mention it incase its at all useful. I too love your photos by the way
Kirislin
thankyou everyone who's said kind things about my pics, I promise I am not fishing for compliments. I see them very differently but maybe we are all critical of our own. I am beginning to wonder if I should look at another editing program, the thought of which fills me with dread. hahahaha. I just use DPP & photobucket for the pics I load onto DOL. I have those in both of the 52 weeks threads - I think they are soft too, though I blame resizing and photobucket. Lightroom is my choice for "real" pics. These large high res pics look great on my calibrated monitor and print well.
tlc
Im with Annie on the light room thing, it really is an awesome editing program and very easy to use. I think you can download a free trial.
persephone
Kirislin.. I have mostly soft pics... point/shoot cameras ,plus slack post processing (often none). I do love LIGHTROOM though.. for correcting/finding what my simple cameras miss Sharpening is something I rarely do ..but very occasionally I will do a light sharpen of a landscape in PICASA
redangel
I use Lightroom, trust me, I am still learning new things every time I use it. Dont be so hard on yourself Kirislin, Some of your portraits done on your macro have been pin sharp to my memory, lighting may have been different. Your photos are always a joy to look at. Just the other day I did a series of photos full manual, they were nothing short of fantastic...I felt like Id found the camera action I had missed out on (mainly through lack of confidence) and well though there are hits n misses I am determined to keep working till I get it right. No doubt you will eventually find out what suits what your looking for also. You have summed up my feelings at times in this topic: I understand what your frustration is. Bellatrix
Kirislin, your pics straight out of the camera are already quite good. I too find the softness annoying, especially when you are really aiming for a super sharp shot. What lens did you use for that shot? The bokeh is beautiful in the bg I dont sharpen any of my original pics after PP, only when ive resized and for web use. I use photoshop though to sharpen. ETA - GIMP is a really good free editing program that I used before I bought photoshop and lightroom. I found its sharpening tool worked very nicely as you could adjust the intensity. http://www.gimp.org/ Edited January 27, 2011 by Bellatrix

Kirislin
thanks wags, tlc and bianca for having a go at sharpening it. And thanks to all for the encouragement. I do think I need to get away from using my lenses almost wide open, at least for close ups, there's no margin for error and I probably need to look at another editing program. weegeorgie
can someone just for interest sakes take this pic and sharpen it in another program? Pic is just a touch soft, not too bad tho. Don't overdo the unsharp mask, that's even worse. It's the background that is the real problem, what a mess. Hot spots & a lump of wood sprouting from the dogs nose are the real killers of the pic. Tip is check the background before you press the button. Good luck.
