Scouty
I have two boxers, no i am not crazy, just crazy in love with the bred Born May 2010 and May 2009 ok they seem to run along and try and scoop up in their mouths grass. They do not throw up after. Nor do they throw up after eating their food. Is this them telling me they are lacking something in their diet. Or just copying my mare? They also wander along and graze aswell. they both get RC boxer junior and adult also raw beef cubed. Plus treats and training food. scout
Nekhbet
Its perfectly normal, all of my dogs do it as well. They can use it for some nutrition, or older tougher grass they use to clean their systems out.
Kelly_Louise
Both mine graze, however both do 2 types of grazing. There is the slow, lazy graze where i know they are fine, or occasionally the more frantic grazing which is usually a sign of tummy upsets - although they very rarely vomit. Chloe has Cushings disease so grass eating has to be reported to her specialist - who tells me that for some dogs, it's just a habit - and that habit should be discouraged. I've never really asked why - or if he just means we should discourage just Chloe from doing it. I believe it's quite common though. If there is vomitting, lethargy or runny poos along with it - I'd be more concerned.

CazReiAndKuma
I've been wondering the same thing. I've noticed my boy Kuma eating grass quite frequently lately which I'd never seen him do before. I wondered if he was missing something in particular from his diet
Henrietta
Both of mine do it, quite often. I think it can perhaps just be a social thing as well. One starts, the other follows and they chew and wander around, content in each others company. Well, that's my interpretation anyway. Edit for wording. rajacadoo
Ive got 4 Basenji's and they are all serious graizers !!! They also have 2 different types of graizing, as Kelly_Louise said. The first is just slow and indiscriminate eating, the other is more of a serious chewing, quite a bit too. When they do that, I know they will vomit, definately. Some Basenji's having what is loosely descrbed as 'empty tummy' episodes. They really need to be fed as close to 12 hours apart, or else the bile vomit will appear... They are more than happy to have food as soon as they vomit !!! Being such a primitive breed, they do have some funny idiosyncrasies, and this is definately one of them

If we don't feed her regularly, she will vomit bile. Usually you know it's coming when the tummy is making horrendous noises. At these times, I have to hand feed her to make sure her tummy is filled a little (even though she doesn't want to eat and probably doesn't feel like eating), and then she is 100% back to normal. I thought I was the only one with such a strange dog!!!
Andisa
Most dogs will eat grass because they like the taste / texture of it - all mine graze - always have.

Mine dont have the grumbling tummy though, at least not that I have heard, it just happens... Basenjis are a very 'spethal' breed, full of quirks, some being very trying, some very endearing

Nope, I have one too. He has always been that way and I find it's worse in the hot weather. I've recently cut Kei down to one meal per day (from two) as he's getting a substantial amount through training (2 x per day, morning and evening equating to 200-300g all up) and that plus 2 meals per day was too much. However if I decide to skip a session for whatever reason I have to remember to give him a biscuit or he pukes. Any yep, it starts off with those horrendous tummy grumbles, progresses to mad grass eating then BLURK and he's fine again.
