Why Don't You Holiday With Your Dog?

I posted last week about our "family" holiday down South.

Bub, like you, my OH and I up until a year ago ( pre Labs ) did the 5 star / lazing around / cocktails by pool / eating and drinking far too much etc....

Mainly in Fiji - we LOVE Fiji - even got married there ...... but NOW - well let's just say that we would miss them far too much and so I suspect those OS days are well and truly over for a while......

OH won't even let them stay overnight at my parent's very dog friendly house these days unless we are there

So as a result I got in contact with the "lovemelovemydog " website annd we have booked an absolutely awesome house near Culburra Beach for April and if I shut my eyes and imagine palm trees I think I am probabaly pretty close to Fiji - except for the room service and fabulously blended cocktails... :)

The lady I dealt with - Christine - was just great....

I think we are both more excited with the proximity of the dog friendly beach around the corner and the fun we will have spending two weeks away with them.. OH and I work really long hours so are so looking forward to spending time with the boofheads..... weekends never seem long enough these

days.. :) and we live along way away from the beach so that will be a novelty in itself !

But that is just our preference at the moment..... it could change but each day we seem to be getting more and more attached to them and to say that we have had a massive lifestyle change would be the understatement of the year... But we wouldn't have it any other way

I think there are two types of holidays. Those where you want to include your "kids", and those you don't! I love my girls to death and would actually like to go away with them and some of my "doggy friends" as I think it would be a lot of fun, but then I am also dreaming of a holiday where I don't have to worry about them. I want to do what *I* want to do and when I want to do it! I'm a bit selfish like that - which is probably why having skin kids doesn't appeal to me at this point in my life!:hug:

Edit: my family are going down south for a long weekend in March and I'm opting to stay home because they don't want the dogs included. I would love to take them with me but they dictate I can't (they refused to even look at a dog friendly cottage which there were plenty!) I am a bit broke too so don't want to kennel them, so I'm saving money that way and money on the mini-holiday. Oh well

I wont do it because i want to enjoy my holiday, I dont want to stress about where we can and cant go, what the dogs are doing, where the dogs are, is it too hot to take the dogs out? too cold? what happens if they get out while in the middle of no where?

They stay home where they are safe, I get to go away and not stress about them, much easier for all of us

Atlas isnt good in the car anymore either, so he rather be at home!

I have taken dogs on holidays before. Our holidays usually consist of visiting family.

I had a family member insist on us holidaying and bringing our puppy; saying how they were bursting to meet him *blah blah blah*

I regret it so much. When we got their we were told he must stay in one room because their dog would attack him if he ventured out of there.

When they took their dog for a walk we let our dog out into the living area. He was so happy to be out of the room.

Anyway he sniffed about and then layed on their dog's bed. They went feral about it! "how dare our dog sleep on their dog's bed!"

that was only part of it; but needless to say it was a nightmare and we won't be doing that again!

As for other sorts of holidays we prefer the freedom that comes with not having the dogs with us.

We take them to our beach house... but aside from that we just don't take holidays!!!

It'd be nice to get an 'adults only' break from them once in a while though  The dogs will be farmed out to respective rellies one day when we can actually be convinced to leave them behind.

My 2 nearly always come on holidays with us, but our idea of a holiday is to go to my brothers house at Killarney for a few days. Lol.

It's fun packing the 2 big dogs, the pram, and all the stuff I need for my 1 year old son, plus my mother, my husband and myself in the car, but we manage!

Other than that, we don't really go on holidays. The longest I've left them was for a few days 2 or 3 times, and I've always found a house sitter to come to my house and look after them. They've never been in a kennel yet!!

I have read many times how people "can't" take their dogs on holidays, so put them in kennels or don't take holidays at all.

Personally I have had no trouble finding pet friendly holiday places. The one I stayed at recently was a pet owners dream!

Why don't you take your dogs?

Is it the cost? Health issues?

I'm not judging, I just love taking my dog & feel there must be some good reasons why people wouldn't do it.

Because they can't travel overseas!!

 I have taken mine on holidays and in fact they have all been planned to coincide with dog trials or dog training but I have also been fortunate enough to stay with friends on all three occasions and recognise that makes it easier .

I'd love to take them on holidays but unfortunately the dog friendly places mean "one dog friendly" and almost always mean "Medium and smaller one dog friendly" so having 4 dogs, one of which is a 75kg boofer means no place is friendly to us.

I don't go on holidays though; except for the odd weekend away (where someone comes to stay at our place), I prefer to spend my time off work with my dogs at home.

Usually my holidays are overseas or require plane trips so the critters can't come. Although you have planted the idea now, perhaps this year we will take a trip with the dogs... Does anyone have suggestions near Brisbane?

As expected, lots of very good reasons.

Being restricted by the kids (and finances), we only go on short holidays within NSW, so I havent yet had to consider what I'd do with the dog if we were to go interstate or overseas. Obviously we wouldn't take her with us then. So we are similar to most of you.

Bub and Meea, we've only been away with friends and kids so the places we have stayed have been 3 beds plus- probably not suitable for your needs?

However, I found them easily doing a pet friendly search on Stayz.

I discovered a lot more pet friendly places the further north you go from Sydney, availability is better and prices are good.

The last place we stayed (in Wallabi Point) allowed pets inside and had a decent sized, very secure courtyard plus a garage. It was fairly reasonably priced too. The area is at the south end of Old Bar Beach (east of Taree). Outside patrolled areas, dogs are allowed offlead from evening to early morning and all day onlead. It was beautiful and fairly deserted.

But yeah, an overseas holiday minus dog (and KIDS!!!) would be fantastic!

ETA: the recent place we rented, they didnt seem to care about the dog- it was never mentioned again after my first enquiry- all I can think is that in more rural areas everyone has dogs so its not as much of an issue? Might mean its easier for multiple dogs?

We only take Riley if we go camping/4wd'ing.

Othertimes its too much hassle. He can't be left alone in a strange place, or he frets, we can't go do restaurants, national parks, shopping centres etc if he's with us. He's much safer and happier staying at my parents place.

I was actually just thinking today how much I would like to take Quinn on my next holiday and how you go about making sure you've got pet friendly accom and what do you do if you can't take them somewhere you are going?

I wouldn't likely take Buster because we usually stay with family and he's DA, doesn't overly like strangers and would try to eat any cat that came near him.

I'll likely take Quinn with me next time though.

The rare times I go away- I am there for myself... ..not my dogs.

Yep, up by 5am every day to ensure that all of them are taken care of exercised fed etc before I go to work, days off spent bathing, vet trips, doing poo pick ups etc, so when I have a holiday it is a holiday.

The rest of my life may revolve around them to a large extent but holidays do not.
