jr_inoz
didn't know whether to post this here or in photography tips and tricks... anyway - have found out that the Tour Down Under will be travelling past here tomorrow - thought I'd try and get some photos. I have virtually no experience taking photos of things moving at speed. I reckon the peloton will be doing about 60 or 70kmh when it goes past. I reckon I can position myself so that I can see them coming toward me and as they go around a sweeping bend. sun shouldn't be a problem. Was going to use my 18-200 lens. I have a canon eos 400d. Should put it on 'multi frame' shooting? Fully auto, or manual? Any tips? It will all happen very fast. Haven't been to the race before (just watched it a lot on TV - that and tour de france)... Kirislin
If you haven't got lots of experience you might be safer to just put it in sports mode and hope for the best. I would suggest sending bechandcharch a PM cause she's got quite a bit of experience photographing cyclists. If you cant get a response from her in time you'd need a fast shutter speed to freeze the action, meaning to get them looking crisp and sharp, at a guess, at least 1/1000th, if you wanted to pan so that they are fairly sharp but the background is blurry, you'd need a slower shutter speed, not sure how slow, maybe 1/200th or less? and you need to follow their movement as you press the shutter button. Panning would be more effective for side on shots. I've never photographed cyclists so I could be completely wrong. Kirislin
found some fabbo pics for you but no info on camera settings, I'd guess a pretty fast shutter for these though. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showth...ng#post11491547 some more http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showth...ghlight=cycling some great shots here and a bit of info on shutter speeds for panning, much slower than I suggested. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showth...ghlight=cycling these were taken in Austraila http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showth...ghlight=cycling
jr_inoz
thanks for your help guys I got some good shots of the support cars that went through first - just setting up focus etc... then - would you believe - memory card failed right before the peloton came through - not a single shot of the cyclists! Go figure. No time obviously to change - very quickly past.

piper
They go past very quickly. Tuesday when I saw them there was a break away of about 4 riders, a gap of around a minute and then the pelaton went flying by. I can definitely understand the no time to swap cards. Bad luck about that
