Will encourage another dog to play, but will back off if not welcomed. They can do agility well, but beware that after the job is done they may well take off to scout for any dropped treats (have seen this at an agility demo - it was so funny). Not always great on recall! Certainly a challenge for you as a trainer I also fell boys are much more laid back than many bitches. In all the breeds I have owned over the years - the bitches tend to be generally bossier and more likely to "bitch" at another dog. Is your dog uncomfortable with males particularly? To me there is a "challange" and there is "idiotic" if I wanted a dog of the latter I would get an English Setter which would suit to a t personality wise but be useless at sports. To me getting a Beagle when I am a noivce trainer that has no interest in putting my dog through a 'drive training' regieme seems like a bad idea. Huski's beagle is awesome! :D But I am not so dedicated a trainer to go through all that when the breed isn't one I partcularly favour... I would not get a boy, I have only had a boy boy dynamic once and it did not work out. Toby is happy to be bossed around, my old bitch who passed away last year did that to him. No ;) but I am calling a person who is specifically looking for a dog to do obedience and agility and goes out and gets an ES idiotic. Would agility be too much for such a large breed? (Will google newfs also ) My bitch is a small bitch and very fit and agile.....We do not have lazy newf's There is a Breeder in the USA who does all sort of things with hers, you just have to start a little later and get them fit first with swimming http://www.sweetbay.com/ Look up Sweetbays agility dogs (newfs). ashka1 Posted January 19, 2011 Share Posted January 19, 2011 While newfs are very trainable and some can and will do agility, not all can and will do it, the walk and tunnel are difficult for dogs of 60 to 80 kg. IMHO I dont think it is the right fit in this situation due to size. My newfs are very active, fit, social, laid back and well mannered but smaller dogs are offten put off by the size of them. A visla does sound like a good match for both you and Toby. To throw something else into the mix..a Puli? Very trainable, great at dog sports. about 15kg???? I started with this breed in juniors & the dogs i competed with where also agility dogs & members of the Pal Superdog team . Having said that how will Toby go with entire hormal bitch ?? Ours turn into complete cows Other gundogs Welsh springer Spaniel but needs some grooming Munsterlander wise talk to Tracy "Mistypoint" she did alot of dog sports with her guys & will talk till the cows come home about them . I have been in contact with Tracy and I was planning a trip to Adelaide mid year to check out some breeds. Will have to do some more research on Welsh Springers too... I did have them on the list at one point but they sort of slipped because there is not much info on them. Tibetan Terriers look cute but I think too much coat We live on a bush block and all I can see is how all the leaves and sticks would get tangled in it's coat if I kept it in show condition. Around the house Toby is very easy going and more then likely if another dog gets physically aggressive with him he just gets sooky and runs to one of us for help, unless he can't get away from the other dog... so flight turns to fright... saying that it is a pretty extreme situation and more then likely Toby would be staying with my brother if I had a bitch in heat in the house, so we could all rest a bit easier. My old girl Lilly was the biggest cow to him... she was a very alpha bitch and was a bit old and sore when Toby joined us and she had no problems telling him when enough was enough which he gladly complied with. Also in saying that Toby is a family dog so when I move out he will stay with my parents and the new dog will come with me. helen Posted January 19, 2011 Share Posted January 19, 2011 Yes I must admit my male lab I think would be a bit big for agility - not that I have tried it much with him, he can jump and he is quick but I think he would be clumsy. If he's a larger Lab he'd be jumping 60cm EVERY jump in Agility. That would mean he'd be jumping higher than his shoulder. A dog can be trained to some degree to turn tightly Mason but its the impact of his entire body weight landing on one leg, each and every jump and just the general wear and tear on his front end I'd be concerned about. A working line Lab would fare better but that rules out showing. ETA: Christine Zink (US Sports vet) has an equation she uses to give an indicator of a dog's agility potential in terms of construction. Divide a dog's weight (in lbs) by its height (in inches). Ideal agility dogs tend to come out at 1.0 or below. She'd recommend not competing with a dog thats result is much above 2.0. My last agility poodle had result of 0.8 The upshot of that is that dogs heavily built for their size are not ideal agilty prospects.. bit of no brainer I suppose. A 60lb, 22 inch Lab (big dog) would have a result of 2.75. If you wanted to do it with a Lab you'd sure want them lean. Stunning..a pleasure to gaze upon!!!thankyou. xxxx RV, its great to know what your needs are, sometimes a dog will make it's own mind up if it is going to 'get on' with another dog and it may not be much to do with breed (leaving out some breeds who are more prone to DA) How are you getting on with ideas? narrowed it down to any yet? English Pointers,,, YAY!! I LOVE amypies manchester, may be a bit small for you, but I think you did say you had met and all got on fine (hope I'm not mixing this up with another poster.. ) The 3 we see here a lot are very focussed on agility, do very very well, fast, light, get on with everyone and everybody, very well socialised though. Stunning looking and easy care, healthy..Lovely all round... I think Amypie's Manchester is adorable but she is too little... and a crazy terrier (that part is for Amypie if she reads this post ) There are a few breeds I am looking into but here in WA we are a bit breed deprived so at some point I am going to have to travel to meet them. I am not at this point considering anything outside gundogs (just haven't found something I like enough) and they are all dual purpose (show/field) breeds .
