Sayly
Toby has met one Kelpie and they didn't really get on. He has met about 100 BC's and he seems to get on well with most of them to a point (i.e when they are throwing a ball for the group). The best interactions he has ever had with other dogs were my friends special older lab, an Aussie, the neighbours Rotweiller and an English Setter - the common denomonator here is that they are all dogs that aren't "in your face" or dogs he has grown up with. He also quite likes the Irish Terriers he has met and a certain Mancherster. You have some awesome Irish Terriers over ther!
RallyValley
yes I just love that temperament! A very adaptable and laid back dog will suit my needs in the future.I have the photo of the spin jumping over the fence with the bird in its mouth as the background on my computer at the moment :D My one little worry is the hair around the mouth - I worry about it being yucky from eating and drinking. How do you manage that Monah? I've only had fine haired dogs previously. Sorry RV if that is not exaclty relevant for you I'll confess to being a big Spinone fan. I'm not crazy about beards either which is why the Bracco Italiano appeals greatly to me. Smooth coated, slightly lighter build (and I'm told slightly more active) but same general temperament. There are a handful of Braccos here now. I've got them down as a 'maybe' dog in the future - just have to accustom myself to drool But that doesn't help RV I suppose. So to get it back on topic, we have Irish Setters who have done well in obedience and agility at our club. Very handsome dogs, that's for sure. Happy for the thread to go off topic It's still about dogs. I think that maybe lets say anything over 35 kilos and over 65cms high is too big. Mason_Gibbs
Yes I must admit my male lab I think would be a bit big for agility - not that I have tried it much with him, he can jump and he is quick but I think he would be clumsy.
poodlefan
Yes I must admit my male lab I think would be a bit big for agility - not that I have tried it much with him, he can jump and he is quick but I think he would be clumsy. If he's a larger Lab he'd be jumping 60cm EVERY jump in Agility. That would mean he'd be jumping higher than his shoulder. A dog can be trained to some degree to turn tightly Mason but its the impact of his entire body weight landing on one leg, each and every jump and just the general wear and tear on his front end I'd be concerned about. A working line Lab would fare better but that rules out showing. ETA: Christine Zink (US Sports vet) has an equation she uses to give an indicator of a dog's agility potential in terms of construction. Divide a dog's weight (in lbs) by its height (in inches). Ideal agility dogs tend to come out at 1.0 or below. She'd recommend not competing with a dog thats result is much above 2.0. My last agility poodle had result of 0.8 The upshot of that is that dogs heavily built for their size are not ideal agilty prospects.. bit of no brainer I suppose. A 60lb, 22 inch Lab (big dog) would have a result of 2.75. If you wanted to do it with a Lab you'd sure want them lean. Nekhbet
why dont you just get a kelpie bitch but from a good breeder. Any dog can be a resource guarder, you just need to get a softer bitch from a good breeder and train it will so your boy doesnt become make his problems greater then they are now. Just having another dog around can be seen as a challenge to a dog with problems so you will have to work with desensitising him to other dogs around anyway. Yes I must admit my male lab I think would be a bit big for agility - not that I have tried it much with him, he can jump and he is quick but I think he would be clumsy. If my bordeaux can do it I think your lab can. He's just not used to the range of movements required so you have to start them off slowly. How does he cope with the dog walk - I've seen one Lab at our club never conquer that obstacle. I try to picture a Dogue jumping 60cm jumps. Mrs Rusty Bucket
The vislas I've met - are happy go lucky, probably bomb proof but a long way off "laid back". Well I suppose the older ones are laid back (plod calmly along) but I think that's because their joints hurt.

However my young boy does tend to be likened to an energiser bunny on speed every now and then.. I would also say they're very 'in your face' with both other dogs and people, well mine are anyway. Our poor kelpie never gets a break from being annoyed unless they're sleeping.
Nekhbet
no I dont trial him I do it for fun. He can do the dog walk, a frame, cant do tunnel he doesnt fit He has a bad back so we only do it occasionally and weaves are out due to the pressure it puts on his disc. He can jump onto a dining table with ease so jumps are no issue, he's just too bone idle to do a lot of them thats how fit Dogues should be. raineth
I have to second what Nekhbet is saying. I have a 60 kg mastiff style mutt and he can jump dining table height with ease. I have taken him to agility and he loved the tunnel and the A frame. I didn't get him to do the tyre jump or the dog walk though. Weaves are difficult; but that could be because I'm not a good trainer :D ETA: I should say though that he is incredibly lazy. We can get about five minutes before it all becomes a bit too much like work for him if pressed he will lay down in the middle of the tunnel Edited January 19, 2011 by raineth
Nevafollo
Field Spaniel? I was also going to suggest a feild, alot of the spaniels could work. personally I love clumbers! Have britneys been suggested? Someone mentioned PBGV to which you were worried about off lead work, just wanted to add to it that my mum has two PBGVs now they do well in the show ring and are very smart. Her boy Niles comes from a mother that is titled in OB and his dads working towards it I do beleive. Niles also has just started off lead work and he is much better than we had expected as everyone said no hes a hound never let him off lead. We took him to the park yesterday and he was off lead with my pointers and he came when called my naughty dogs did NOT!
badboyz
Only read the first page (sorry will go back soon) but Beagles would be ideal. They are generally wonderful with other dogs. Will encourage another dog to play, but will back off if not welcomed. They can do agility well, but beware that after the job is done they may well take off to scout for any dropped treats (have seen this at an agility demo - it was so funny). Not always great on recall! Certainly a challenge for you as a trainer I also fell boys are much more laid back than many bitches. In all the breeds I have owned over the years - the bitches tend to be generally bossier and more likely to "bitch" at another dog. Is your dog uncomfortable with males particularly? Monah
my next dog will be a spinoneI just love them!!! check out this site: spinone club of GB and if you go to the gallery section you can see how incredibly athletic they can be! Amazing :D Aren't they wonderful??? I spend hours on that site, and facebook re spin friends. I see a few vizss in there too. Those photos etc. are EXACTLY what mine is like. One of the things I really like about the breed is that (as far as my experience goes) they are what they are, you dont hear of any dog or human aggression, nervousness etc. they are very stable dogs. I'm pretty sure there has never been a recorded bite from a spin. there can always be exceptions to the rule, but having had contact with very many spin people and breeders form all over the world, and here is aust., I have not heard of one yet. THere was one on HEartbeat (tv show) later episodes after dear old Alfred died. she was a honey!! and so good, even as a very young pup.... the downside was that they became a bit 'popular' and unsuitable people got them, so they have an amazing rescue/rehome service in UK where all the spins needing homes live in homes and socialise with heaps of people and dogs, upwards of 30 or 40. the photos are so lovely... yes I just love that temperament! A very adaptable and laid back dog will suit my needs in the future. How do you manage that Monah? I've only had fine haired dogs previously. Sorry RV if that is not exaclty relevant for you ;) I have a t towel i wipe her face with when she eats or drinks. They don't really get that yukky, the fur is very wiry. If not showing, you can cut it, but I like a beard etc :D the slobber isn't too bad at all. Not much of it. I love Braccos too, but there are only a couple here, and I think they are not going to fo any further with them Looks like I'll have to find a 'partner'...pf.. to import with.. I'm crazy about them. I'm a pretty dirty girl anyway (literal, not as in ;) 'you know'.. ;) ) and a bit of slobber and ick is fine. I still think RV, you should have a look at wire vizss.. lovely, nowhere near as hyper as a smooth viz, sort of inbetween a spin and a viz. but very suited to all sports and easy to train. Spotted Devil has put up a video of their ESS, .... dont look, you will WANT one..(I do) ;) (in general)
