I am wanting to get a plan/diagram of how to make a trampoline type whelping box. I have an "ordinary" one with pig rails, but have been told the trampoline type is much better in avoiding puppies getting laid on and smothered.

Can anyone help me?

Hi Murraydebbie.

I can't visualize what you are saying, do you have a photo of that style at all?

Thanks. :crossfingers:

No I don't have a photo, but the box has a raised floor made from eg shade cloth. I'm not certain how it works, but have heard people talking favourably about this style.

The actual bedding is like a trampoline then? How unusual. I'll have to go and have a google.

Just a thought; but wouldn't the weight of the mother bitch drag the pups toward her, increasing the possibility of her crushing them?

Well yes, I would have thought so as well, that's why I want to get instructions on making one.

I would think any bed with that much give in it would make the pups roll to the centre and be more likely to over heat or get stepped on?

How do pups cope with getting in and out of the box when a bit older?

Is that really a problem with Cockers? We usually don't even bother with the pig rails with Border Collies, finding that the puppies constantly get stuck under the rails and I have never heard of a Border bitch lying on a puppy. It mainly seems to be the large or clumsy breeds that have problems.

Read the description of the trampoline type box and still can't see any advantage over a normal whelping box.

I used a whelping box like this for my last litter. It was borrowed off another breeder. Will have a hunt for pictures and post. It worked really well for us.

Basically the shade cloth 'trampoline' part is on it's own frame and is removable, we took it out once pups were up and walking around. We really liked it and would recommend/use again.

Can you tell me if the shade cloth is pulled firmly or left with a slight dipping appearance?

Its pulled tight, as the weight of the bitch gives it a slight dip.

I made my own trampoline bed to fit in whelping box whilst pups were tiny ,but remove @ about 2 weeks of age .

very simple ill try to explain :)

make up a wooden frame the same size as yr whelping box

nail strips of wood to inside of whelping box (or sit the bed on pig rails if suitable ,)if not simply slide the trampoline bed onto the rails u attatched to whelping box

the shade cloth must be pulled tight across the frame & securly anchored to frame its self ,doubleing yr shade cloth is advisable .

I would never raise new borns with out my trampoline bed !!!

It certainly reduces the risk of sqaushed babies.
