Wyntervale
I'm mostly just having a vent... we have an appointment with a repro specialist on Tuesday to try to get to the bottom of it. Lola had a little bit of swelling around the 28th of December, but nothing else discernible. This would be her third season with me and I have not seen any discharge from her but have previously seen some behavioural signs. This time there was still nothing, not even behavioural after two weeks and I got her prog tested and cervical smear... the smear indicated that she was either coming into or going out of season and her prog test was 0.69 and they asked me to come back in a few days (Friday) and the result was 0.28! But on the day she got the reduced reading she also showed some of the behaviours she normal has, a jittery jaw and playing up with the Afghans (both desexed before anyone asks ) I just have no idea what's going on with this girl... and being a first timer it's bloody frustrating! /vent. Tralee
Yep. We're also novices. My girl completely missed her last season. Came into heat and went out just as quickly. Got a mating in but she didn't take.

I'm finding it more frustrating because it's been 10 months since her last season, so if she is coming in and I miss it we're going to be in for another looooong wait. Alyosha
Silent heats? You might need to run her with an experienced male for a breeding, as he might be the only one to know when is the right time!

It's not just the wait, good homes get taken by other dogs. This was to be her fourth mating. She was overweight and a younger bitch came into season at the same time. It was interesting times to say the least, but my girl, sort of, got lost in the dust. :D

I'm not sure.. it is a possibility... we have had a couple of careful visits from an entire male to gauge interest with no real result so far. But the combination of cervical cells and dropping progesterone levels are just really confusing.. there is obviously something going on.. what it is I have no idea. Tralee
What really sucked was getting an ultra sound after six weeks and - no pups. What I did notice though was she had not swelled as much as usual. Maybe she's got the early menopause.
SwaY
cervical smear... the smear indicated that she was either coming into or going out of season I know of two people who have recently had this done on their bitches BOTH were wrong! Cells may show one thing, doesn't mean they are right.
fifi
LOTG, what's her bitch family history like ? repro stuff often goes down the line. Hopefully the repro specialist might have some answers. fifi

I'll be crossingmy fingers that the specialist has some good news.

Progesterone is reliable, cells are not 100% - even if done in conjunction.

Lowenhart
LOTG - There are some really tricky Lowchen bitches. I know, I have a couple... If you can get in touch with the breeder of Lola's sire, she'll know a hell of a lot of the history in Lola's pedigree. Sorry she s being such a bugger. As her 2 of her sisters have pups on the ground (to males that live with them) I'd be wondering if you were just unlucky. Either that, or you need a male around 24/7 to get her knocked up. Hugs. Yeah I think she's going to be painful particularly given that I don't have any entire males living with us to give an indication that she's ready to go. She had a jittery jaw this morning again and I inspected her, no blood but everything looked more wet than usual, could just be her licking but I didn't think so. All four of her litter sisters have now had litters, all with males around 24/7. I wonder if the stud dog owner wants a new dog for a while? Wyntervale
Well the good news is that we haven't missed her season *yay* It seems that she is just very very early in her season... she is booked in to go for another cervical smear on Friday as the doc said that it's not worth doing another prog test just yet. Depending on the outcome of her next cervical smear she will have another prog test done to see how she's tracking. At least I know I haven't missed it.. that is keeping me happy! Don't waste your time on the smear! I took a bitch to get a prog test done, they said do you want a smear as well - I said yeah why not - Bitch was day 7 . They came back from the smear and said you missed her - I said No I haven't, my dog would have told me blah blah. A prog test was insisted upon (by my mentor) and it came back later that day with 9.4, I had not missed her the smear was wrong! I could have just left her after the smear and i would have missed her that season If I had of relied on the smear only. Prog test IS the only 100% reliable way on know what stage your bitch is at. Lola's progesterone tests have been so low that the vet said it's not even worth doing another one just yet which is why he did the smear, he also looked at the colour of her vagina and said it was too early to be worthwhile. He did say that the progesterone test is the best thing to do and he relies on those... the smear is just to determine when to prog test.
